I'll have my upper splint for 6-8 weeks. Which should be interesting, because after 4 weeks classes start again and I'm in a negotiations-focused class this semester. Negotiations require talking ;)

This is really helpful in giving me questions to ask my surgeon...I really didnt hav to slightest idea what a splint was...I had something totally different pictured in my head.lol MY doctor said I'll be stayin overnight...does anyone know the average amount of time I will have to stay the next day? Since its cold outside hopefully my face wont feel bad :) The only good part of the surgery being during the holidays is that I get to spend christmas with my family.....Otherwise I would be working.Arvensis I feel ur pain....I'm a college student and I'm hopin by the time school starts back in mid january I will have reasonably normal speech. Does anyone know about how long my outward appearance will be weird post op?(swelling, etc.)

I stayed until around dinner time the next day.

Usually, your face will look somewhat normal by about two weeks after surgery, although there can be residual swelling for many weeks or even months.

Meryaten, interesting that your doc is so speedy! I think my surgery was a bit long because of the bone graft, and then my doc also mentioned he had some difficulties with my lower jaw. Apparently, the bone just did not want to break. I guess I must have strong bones!

I've been teaching with a splint in my mouth for over two months now. The first few days it was kind of hard to get used to. Nowadays, it doesn't seem to give me any trouble! Of course, it does alter the acoustical formants when I sing, and how I shape my mouth and tongue for vowels, so if I sing professionally, I take it out beforehand. If I'm singing with the children at school, I just leave it in.

Heheh Oh I'll talk no matter what.... I've never once been silenced, not likely to happen now.

Of course, it is going to mess with my Russian and I anticipate I'll have to relearn how to make those sounds after getting splint off since moving upper jaw forward so much. heh.

Reporting from OHIO here...

Still dealing with sinusitis. Didn't take my Sudafed this afternoon. Thought I didn't need it any more. Big mistake!

Yesterday I blended and strained FIFTEEN cans of yummy soup of all different varieties, and ran it through the sieve, then froze it in single-serve containers. I'm all set for week one!

Got all my ice packs in order. Prescriptions tomorrow.

Pre-op consult is tomorrow. I am laying it on the line with the surgeon. HE NEEDS TO HAVE A GOOD PLAN THAT I CAN BUY. If not, this thing may not happen.

That's all for now!

I'm impressed by your preparation. I guess after three times you'd be well prepared!
