Pre-Surgery, Braces for Many Months

#1 Post by nomadic myth »

I just started orthodontic treatment, and I'll need the braces for 18 months before having surgery to move my lower jaw back. Of course the braces are going to correct the angling of my teeth-- my top teeth angle forward and my lower teeth angle backwards. How uncomfortable will my bite be at about month 15 or 16? I'd guess my jaw surgery is going to correct for 5mm, although I don't know the exact amount.

There's no way to know that; everyone is different and how their teeth move is different too. I can tell you that right before my surgery I had a quite open bite with my lower jaw in front of my upper (i had upper jaw surgery)and wasn't eating any sandwiches, but it's not the end of the world.

I had braces a couple years ago as a precursor to my upcoming rebrace and surgery to fix an underbite, so my bite has been messed up since forever... It's not that uncomfortable, but I get frustrated sometimes with TMJ problems and food. If you're committed, the time will pass by, and you'll end up better than you started! Your underbite (im assuming) will become more noticeable though because of the angle of your teeth.... hope this helped!

it'll look worse before it starts looking better

....but you'll get where you should be at the end. I had an edge-on-edge bite, they made it look worse with 12 months of braces.... then after surgery my jaws snapped into the right positions.
