I know it sounds bothersome, but I'm 7 months out and I know there's an area that's still a little swollen on the right side, but I bet by looking at pictures you couldn't tell where that was. I know, because it's my face, but it's not obvious to everyone else. So yeah, the bulk is gone, but there's still bits here and there. it's no biggie

I was pretty much back to normal in two weeks... it really just depends on your body.

Well, I was basically "back to normal" after the first 2 weeks too... as in, I didn't look like a balloon anymore, and I was able to go about in public again. But now I'm 7 weeks post op and I'm still swollen. Not noticeable to the average person on the street, or even to my parents, but if I put my index finger inside my mouth and put my thumb on my cheek and squeeze, I can feel that my cheeks are still really quite thick and swollen. I don't know how long it'll take to be completely unswollen again, but I suspect it could be up to or beyond six months.

I posted all of my medical record photos here if you want to browse them and judge for yourself. Click on 'photos' and 'post op recovery photos.' Aside from the obvious massive swelling, I think you can still see a visible swelling difference in the 1 & 2-month photos compared to the 4-month photos demonstrating that swelling can linger for at least 2 months. It may just me though because, as stated, it my face I'm comparing.

There are lots of different things that can be done to help swelling, I think. The last time I had surgery, I religiously took Omega-3 (along with my other supplements) and I do believe that it made a difference in how much I swelled, and how long it lasted.

All the best!

Do you all suppose that a past experience of surgery on the face is any indicator of how long swelling/numbness will last in the same person after jaw surgery? I had rhinoplasty a long time ago and the swelling was gone in a couple of weeks while the numbness sloooowly receded over a two year period until I regained feeling completely.

Meryaten's right, I think. Both internal and external factors apply.

So, do your best to do something about the factors you have control over, and let the rest be, for the best result.

i had reconstructive jaw surgery a little over a month ago and even though im still wired shut, pretty near all noticable swelling is gone. I was told that it would take 3 weeks for 90% of the swelling to go down and about a year for the other 10% to go down and it also depends on the person too because im pretty young im 16, i could possible heal faster than someone who is older than me.

Meryaten is right, there are all sorts of factors involved in the recovery process.

You might want to take into consideration your thought processes as having an effect on your healing as well. You know, your mind is part of your body!
