missing canine?

#1 Post by Ellie »

hello, i'm ellie, i'm 18 & am in the middle of treatment for an underbite... i'm a bit of a lurker on these forums, i read all the time but i've only ever posted once or twice! anyway, i've been examining my teeth in the mirror regularly recently (some might say too regularly - but i am getting SO bored of waiting for this surgery now and find myself looking constantly and daydreaming over my new face) and it's come to my attention that i'm missing a canine on top! now i'm worried that my teeth are never going to look normal even after going through such hell with them, and that bothers me! it just doesn't make sense to me how they're ever going to line up properly with a massive great tooth missing, probably because i am not an orthodontist and don't know about these things. but yes it's ages until my next appointment so i was wondering if anyone has had a similar issue with their teeth? any after photos or anything that might help me visualise what it's going to look like? thanks!

Hi, I had an impacted canine and still had the baby canine. I had the impacted canine removed as it was in a difficult position to bring down, and I also had the baby canine removed. So like you, I don't have one of my upper canines.

My orthodontist is going to use the tooth which sat next to my extracted canine as a substitute (I think it's called a premolar). He will turn it slightly as it fills the gap where my baby canine used to be and it will look just like a canine. It means he's also had to remove one of my premolars on the other side so that I don't have an uneven bite (I also had two bottom teeth removed when I was younger, so the extractions make sense in my case). Not sure what shape your premolars are, but perhaps something similar can be done in your case?
