I have my nipple pierced, and a few years ago I was rushed in for an emergency operation (the nurses were literally undressing me as they pushed the trolley down the corridor!). I was asked if I had any jewellery, and said just my watch, which they took - I didn't even thing about the piercing.
Once they took my top off and saw the nipple ring, the nurse said "Ok, you'll have to take that out!" And of course I couldn't, because it needs pliers to expand the ring so the ball can come out and release the ring.
They stuck a bit of foil tape type stuff over it instead, and said it was because if they needed to do any electrical cauterisation then it could burn me otherwise.
They also managed to lose my watch (a Rolex, family heirloom!) for three days until it was found in an old sterilising machine! Apparently the nurse just threw it in there because there was no time to get a "belongings" bag, then forgot all about it!

I would remove anything foreign that's around/in your mouth and whole face for the matter, regardless of what its made of. You're going to have tape put on and taken off various parts of your face while you're unconcious and have all sorts of nets and blankets and things being put on and taken off - and that's just during the surgery. Recovery is a whole other story when your face swells up like a balloon.

Well, I'm six weeks post-op, and today I called my surgeon to ask if it would be ok to get a lip ring. I had planned on going to get one tonight, but he said I shouldn't and that I need to wait. I stopped by the piercing studio anyway just to get the piercer's opinion, and he said I should wait until all the feeling comes back and that if I did it now, it would slow down the healing process. Geeeeeez, I'm sooo disappointed. There's really no swelling anymore but my bottom lip and chin are still quite numb. But I don't see what the problem is. The nerves are already damaged -- what's the harm in damaging a little more? It'll all eventually heal. I've been waiting over two years for my piercing

I don't think getting it right after the surgery is a good idea...I got my lip pierced about 5 years ago and with the amount of swelling you'll already have in your face, it will likely cause more harm and scar tissue buildup than if you wait until you're completely healed. You also ned to keep in mind that you will need to clean and soak the piercing two to three times daily, and this could be extremely difficult while recovering from surgery and having your jaw wired/banded.KarlClayLA wrote:I say wait and then get it right after surgery when you're all numb. You're going to have so much other hardware in there anyway, might as well throw a piercing in there with the mix. Plus your system will be so full of antibiotics and stuff that it will greatly reduce the chances of it becoming infected.
I recoommend you get it either several months BEFORE the surgery, so that it won't grow over while you have it out for surgery, or wait until your swelling goes down after the surgery. If you get it done before the surgery and end up going down to smaller jewelry (they pierce with 14 guage, 7/16" diameter to allow for swelling), make sure you have a bigger hoop on hand to put back in while you're swollen from surgery. And no matter WHAT, keep it CLEAN!
I wear a hoop in my lip, and it doesn't touch or affect my beraces in any way, though I do find that the combo of lipring + braces means I go through an awful lot of chapstick! I will have to take it out for my surgery in the fall, but it's not too big a deal, as I remove it for work and had it out for about a week without it growing over. Not everyone can do this without it growing over, you just have to kind of test it out for a few hours at a time if you get it done prior to surgery.
Good luck!
