Hey everyone its so reassuring to know theres others in the same boat. Does anyone have any suggestions of what kind of preperations we should be making to make post-surgery a little easier?

recovery questions?

#38 Post by Lacrosse Mom »

Hi June crew,

I have a few questions about surgery recovery:

1. Does anyone know how long you will need constant supervision? My doctor said I shouldn't be left alone the first few nights.

2. How soon before you can get out of the house, drive, etc.?

I had my molds done at the orthodontist yesterday. They are going to evaluate my molds to confirm a surgery date.

Does anyone know what the pre-surgery process entails?

Thanks - :D

I'll know a lot more about the pre consult and my surgeon's answers to your questions tomorrow. I have my consult at 9:00 a.m. My ortho warned me yesterday that I would have a splint (she had a devilish smile) so I'm afraid to ask that question along with banding/wires.

Think positive thoughts.

Hi Lacrosse Mom

1. I am thinking it all depends on the surgery you are getting and how comfortable and how you are feeling. I really think it kinda depends on the person but also the type of surgery. For me personally I have someone staying with me for a whole month (I think I will be fine after a week or 2 but it is nice to have the company as well. I also live with my mom so she will be there for me at night time as well along with my friend :D

2. Again I think this all depends on the type of surgery you are getting. I would ask your surgeon this question. I don't drive myself cause i don't have enough vision so I always have someone driving me lol. I am assuming you will be able to to get out of the house within a few weeks of post surgery. start off with short walks and short errands and work up to longer outings. I can imagine that it will take some time to regain full energy again so you will really have to pay attention to how you are feeling and try not to strainyour self so much that you get exhausted.

3. Pre surgery process: For me I have had molds taken, x rays and digital pictures taken. I have also got really strong wires put on my brackets and wire tie downs to hold the brackets in so they don't have any chance of falling out. I will be going for a pre admit apt a few days before my surgery. When I saw the dental surgeon a few months ago he went over my surgery, the risks and the complication and the tentative recovery time line (he told me everyone recovers a bit different so he wanted to give me a general time line). I also had to fill out paperwork for the surgery (all that fun stuff). If I can remember correctly when my sis got her pre admit apt, she was shown around the ward where she would be staying in and got to meet the anesthegioligist team and some of the nurses.

hope this helps and good luck with your surgery!

I guess the answer to q 1 depends as said on what you ahving done and how jaw being held... if you are wired rather than elasticated you will need someone around more at the beginning in case of vomitting I suppose. If elasticated then less so.

different peole react differently to aneastheis but but most folk seem to be out and about of the house for short walks etc less than a week after op ...... that certainly my aim . I want to be up seeeing my horse in her field within a few days as that will be the best therapy for me :D

pre op for me (and in uk generally ) consists of

moulds for the splints... I am going for those tomorrow too

check up with nurse taking bloods , screeening for mrsa, taking height / weight / blood pressure

meeting with surgeon on week pre op for consent, chat re the final decisions re the actual op and what they are doing about the splint and making sure I am physically fit for the op ! presume check x rays too and pics ...... not sure if the aneasthetist is there then or whether thats the morning of the op.

2 days pre op the surgical hooks are going on .... and I presume the lower braces too 8)

Well my exam went a lot like you expect. Molds, photos, x-rays, mouth bow (for what I don't know), brief discussion of what's planned. A brief discussion on my questions.

While I said I had a pretty good idea of the pluses and minuses, I would have liked a bit more discussion. The plan is for between 9.5 an 10 mm advancement which should greatly aid my breathing and TMJ issues. The big issue is he would like to postpone it to June 29 but that is likely to screw up my insurance situation.

I will be on liquid diet for 4-6 weeks.

No wires, maybe banded but a splint........OH NO!!!

He is the main presenter for a conference in Japan two days later. He flies out of the country at 6:30 a.m. the next day. He did assure me he had good associates who would take care of me.
