Hi,
I had a consultation with a maxillofacial surgeon recently and he presented me with 2 treatment options for my weak chin.
The first was to have 2 years of braces followed by lower jaw surgery. He said this would completely remedy my profile and he recommended this option.
The 2nd was to have a genioplasty to bring my chin forward and improve my profile.
I like the idea of the 1st procedure but I can't imagine going through 2 years of braces again. He mentioned he would have to augment my chin after the braces aswell as bring my jaw forward. I was wondering if it was possible to have a genioplasty now and then follow the route of the 1st procedure?
Thanks

I see where you are going with this, but the overall facial harmony and balance is better served when the procedures are done at the same time and after the braces.
The braces will align the teeth and bite so the surgeon knows exactly how much to move the jaw to get things working correctly. Then this facial harmony determines how much the chin needs to move. Moving the chin position first without knowing where everything else needs to sit could really compromise the final look.

chin
Samsu82,
i would do them both, I did the chin(genio) by itself @ 5yrs ago , B/c just like you i didnt want to go through braces and also the extra cost. I now have had braces for a while and am scheduled to have BSSO( lower advancement) and chin reduction at the end of this month. I wish i would have done it the first time instead of trying to cut corners, Not to mention the chin by itself looks witchy b/c of the angle btwn my lower lip and jaw. I hope this helps you. Good luck with your decision.

I know that all to well, I mistakenly chose to have invisalign then a sliding genioplasty which improved my profile immensely but I still have lip incompetence and some mentalis strain. So realizing my mistake I'm getting braces and finishing the job with upper/lower jaw surgery. It will be a great day when my lips are closed at rest.LemnzestManatee wrote:I suppose you could do the 2nd option first, then do the 1st. But it is a lot easier to just have the lower jaw surgery and genio done at the same time. Otherwise you would have to go to through the recovery process two full times instead of one fell-swoop.
samus82, do yourself a favor and have the braces then the lower jaw/genio surgery.
