what kind of surgery corrects the damaging effects of mouth breathing, and how long would one have to mouth breathe to really cause any damage to the face/jaws.
just wondering.
just a quick question regarding mouth breathing and surgery

I'd also like to add that in addition to the orthognathic jaw surgery, some correction of the nose may be needed. I also had to have turbinectomies and a partial septoplasty at the same time as my jaw surgery.

I was a mouth breather for 45 years before my surgery. I don't know if it did any kind of damage--other than contributing to my sleep apnea, which is pretty damaging. I had an open bite, and I had BSSO and Lefort 1, and turbinectomies--now my lips stay closed easily--even though I still can't feel one of them!--and breathing through my nose is easy. I'm still in recovery mode--just over 5 weeks out of surgery, but the improvements in my breathing, and the elimination of the sleep apnea (as far as I can tell, as I haven't yet had another study done) have me pretty pleased.
