Underbite
Moderator: bbsadmin
Hi Mart,
The last time I posted to your thread is back in Jan 2007. I was in the same situation as you...huge underbite. Now having gone through amost 2 yrs of braces and a double jaw surgery, I have to say that IT IS ALL WORTH IT!! I can't stress that enough. So just hang on there...all of this is only temporary. Eventually, it will be all over and then you will look fantastic and get your self-esteem back!! I know it sucks when people around you don't understand, but hopefully you can find comfort on this site.

At my last appointment my mouth was completely renovated, both wires were replaced with thicker ones, including what looked like thinner wires looped over and under the bricks on my lower and upper front teeth, which she said were power chains. The uppers were given linked ligs to speed things up. while waiting in reception i decided i would go a little crazy and get bright orange ligs, please bow down to their greatness.
since my last update in August i've followed sound advice and kept myself busy, this helped take my mind firmly off anything related to my cake hole and it has helped no end. I confided my situation with a close friend and he put things firmly into perspective. I'm not out of the woods yet but i'm getting there.
Mart.

underbite
im 15 years old and i am one of the most un-confident girls you can find. ive had an underbite for as long as i can remember. it sucks because im always nervous of what people think of me and if my friends talk about it behind my back. it makes me feel so uncomfortable and people have made fun of me for it all my life. i admit i cry about it sometimes because it just sucks so bad. why me? ya know. my mom always ignores me when i "complain" about it because "you cant even tell" and "im beautiful the way i am" but im afraid to know what she really thinks. people dont understand the emotional part of it unless they experience it. i really want surgery or something but it seems like everyone keeps putting it off. I hate bringing it up because im not sure if my parents can really afford the braces and surgery.. i cant talk about this with ANYONE because they dont understand and its quite embarassing. so if someone could talk to me about it that would be nice

alliepage92,
Like Meryaten says above, you would feel so much better to talk to a dentist or Ortho about this and let them give you their opinion. It would help to know the plan when you're ready to do something about it. You won't know the cost until you take the initiative to ask.
I really feel for you and can understand your unhappiness. But, it's also important to try not to make your bite the main focus of your life. My family also told me I looked fine and not to worry about it (slight underbite, major asymmetry). Even my husband said he had never noticed it! But, my pictures told another story! In the end, I did it for me, to have a jaw that closes right and looks even. And my headaches are a lot better.
Do some research, talk to your dentist. You'll feel a lot better .

Hey there alliepage92,
I agree with all of the above & understand how you feel also. I've had an underbite since I was 10-11, now I'm 27. Please don't feel bad about yourself, don't make it your main focus. Surround yourself with people who care alot for you. Those are the people you can guarantee will help you through this & much more. Don't let anyone make you feel sad, u r beautiful just as your mother & I'm sure many other people have said. Sometimes we ourselves can be our own worst critics and we cannot see past our imperfections.
I only just started treatment & didn't even want to approach the subject at your age, (regret i didn't now! Lol!) so you already have the upper hand & now you just need to seek a professional opinion & let a dentist assess you, then you can get the ball rolling. I wish you all the best and be sure to come on this forum even just to read some of the posts relating to you (I did the same & felt my surgery was a breeze because of this forum & didn't even post on here till 1 month ago - 5 months post-op!! Lol!). Good luck.

Hi alliepage92,
It's definitely the right choice to go for treatment. $$ will always be the obstacle... so try all ways and means to get it (part time jobs/ bug ur parents) and start your treatment AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!! Do not hesistate any more!!
You'll definitely be glad that u made the right choice just as I and many others here have

Time marches on, i'm now in my 10th month in braces (crazy!) and today i had a brace change, i had my upper wire changed, also had a powerchain put on my front four teeth on the top, which is living up to its name! i chose blue for my ligs but was soooo tempted to go with something christmasy like a mix of green red and white but i woosed out at the last minute
While all this was going on my orthodontist was explaining that the wire being put on the top was my penultimate wire and that after the next swap they will make some moulds of my bite and see how things match up, so i'm quite far away from surgery yet but i guess that was a reminder that it's really only just round the corner. Anyhoo heres another pic of my cheesy grin, but this picture is extra special because it is the first time my front two teeth have touched EVER!!!! Woop woop, i've even been out for a drink to celebrate, how sad.
Mart x

Haha Mart, we are both in EXACTLY the same position right now, Ive also just had my powerchains put on the top teeth, and your teeth look exactly the same way mine do just now as well.
Do you also find breathing through your nose difficult?
I read that you were feeling depressed a few months ago, I also know how that feels, when you look around at most other people, and they all have perfectly aligned jaws/teeth, and they dont know how lucky they are.
What you have to remember though, is there is also an upside to our problem, just think... when its all over.... how happy, grateful and satisfied you'll be for the rest of your life, knowing that you faced this challenge head-on and came through it.
Also, if you can be confident and have good self esteem in your current position, imagine what you'll be like when its fixed.

Meryaten- thanks for noticing I told my housemates about my gap finally closing and they had no idea i had one in the first place It's pretty incredible how much they can straighten your teeth in 10 months! i always had this silly idea before braces that teeth were solid and unmovable, still a bit baffled on how teeth can move.
Paul- wow we're pretty close then. Its cool to hear from someone in the exact same boat as me! it's hard to find people who can truly relate to my situation. Yeh i know how that feels, all three of my brothers have perfectly straight teeth and jaws which is soooo annoying, god knows why i got chosen. i think my grandad had an underbite so it must have skipped or something. The thing is whenever i tell my friends how perfect their teeth are they usually mention they had braces at some point, so that solves it!
funny you should mention the nose breathing, the bridge of my nose is a little asymmetrical, so i find it harder to breath through my right side, not too sure if the surgery will help this, also not sure if i should tell my surgeon about it.

The problem with nose breathing usually affects people who have a short/undergrown upper jaw, its probably got something to do with the jaw bone blocking the airway somehow... Iam not a doctor, but thats my theory anyway!
I have also read that people who had surgery on a short upper jaw to bring it forward, have noticed that it not only affects breathing through the nose, but it also slightly affected there voice, being less nasal sounding after surgery.
I dont think my voice sounds nasaly right now, but improvements improvement.

Hi Mart,
Just wanted to comment on how amazing your teeth look now. Checking the before picture at the beginning of your thread, you would hardly believe it is the same person!
You must be thrilled so far, I know they always warn those of use with misalignments that the underbite/overbite, has to get worse before it get better, but I'd say yours definitely looks much better than before and the underbite does not look any more exagerrated to me.
I am now almost 7 months into treatment and have my next adjustment on 3rd Dec - they originally told me I'd be ready for surgery in approx 8-9 months but I think that timescale has stretched out a bit - hopefully around the 12 month mark??? Maybe I will find out more on 3rd?
Sounds like things are moving fast for you now, won't be long.......
Best Wishes
