i'm at nearly the same stage as you, in yorkshire. i had my first appointment at the hospital in july, they just looked at my teeth and took some measurements, then made me another appointment which is on 24th sept. i think they'll do moulds and xrays then. Be prepared for lots of waiting for appointments!!
Good Luck! Helen x
what treatment are u having..upper or lower?
i realise that it will be a waiting game... not looked into private..have you? xxx
Hi, sorry I'v taken so long to reply, just got back from holiday this weekend. Im not sure if i'v 'passed the measurement test', i didnt know there was one, but by making me another appointment for records, i'm assuming they think i'm suitable. I asked my health insurance people if i'd be able to claim for treatment and they said no, so not looked at private treatment since then!
My next appt is this thursday, ill let you know how it goes! I think itll be lower jaw advancement only, but will wait and see what the surgeon thinks!!

yes please let me know how it goes...
not long now till my appointment..15th(ooow i am counting down the days for this 1st app).. xx all the best for thursday.. xx
Hi,
I had my appointment yesterday with the consultant orthodontist, (I'm at Barnsley too!) she basically just took moulds and photos and then booked me back in to the joint clinic with the surgeon. They only do these once a month so i'v got to wait til January for that!!
She said that i'll get braces within a year, and the recent audit showed that average time from braces on to braces off is 2 1/2 years, with the surgery happening about 2 years in. So it seems we're in for a long wait!!
Good news is, there doesnt seem to be an issuse with NHS funding, as long as i'm happy with the treatment plan they discuss next time, its all systems go! Apparently i get to see an image of what i'll look like after, at my next appointment!
Take care,
Helen

Barnsley, really?
So I assume you are seeing Nicola Parkin, who I see. She's really lovely.
I've been waiting for the surgery for a long time, still waiting- but once you start with the braces it moves pretty quickly because you see your progress and go with it. It's once you're teeth are straight and you're just waiting to see the elusive surgeon that gets weary! Welcome to my world
I've met both surgeons who work within our area; when I had my first surgery (maxillary expansion) I had Miss Jandu, however she is on prolonged maternity leave currently, so I'm seeing Mr Smith (who I saw right at the start of treatment, too). I think I've actually seen all the consultants who work there, because I saw Mr Holmgren too (the other ortho) right at the start of my treatment before moving to Nicola....I'm a regular there, I tell ya

Hi there,
I haven't been on this board for ages now as I had my op in July 2008 to correct an underbite - but I still drop by from time to time.
My surgery and treatment was all done in London on the NHS - I did pay for the supply of white brackets (about £270) but I don't think all orthodontists and surgeons allow this, some insist on metal brackets as they seem to stay stuck to the teeth better than the ceramic ones.
My case was for an underbite, although I was actually quite symmetrical and most of my back teeth met, so chewing wasn't really a problem. My case was taken on by the NHS with no problems at all.
Your bite sounds like it is not very efficient with only the couple of teeth meeting so I can't imagine they would say no to the treatment.
Good luck for your appointment, I think you will get approved for NHS treatment.
It is a long process, my first consultation was feb 2005 then my operation was July 2008, braces came off October 2008 and I am still wearing my retainer every night and probably will do well into the future.
Once you get started and see progress the time just flies and it is really interesting stuff (well I found it interesting). With underbites, they often have to get the teeth into the ideal position first which means making the underbite worse - this is not a nice thought but really isn't that bad - I don't think anyone noticed that mine was worse, it was only me that did really.
I would make sure that when you have your appointment you stress how much you underbite worries/upsets you emotionally, also let them know that you feel you are not chewing your food properly (I am assuming this, but can't see that you can with only a couple of teeth meeting) also are you sure you don't get any discomfort or pain in your jaws? - this can only help with your case!
Good Luck

thank you for your post...
i would post a pic of my horrendous bite but i can't at this stage till i know things are moving.. once they are i will for sure so you can see how bad it is...
i dont get any discomfort at all with my jaw or when i chew..
my main reasons for wanting this is the emotion pain.. i feel if i carry on like this then i will hit deep depression.. i should not feel like this at only 24 years old..i cant even go out with friends because i feel people are looking at my mouth..with me... you cant see that its a jaw issue.. people think its my teeth

this saturday i have my friends wedding.. and i have to stand infront of 100s of people and read a speech and i worry they all be looking at my mouth. as everyone does on a daily bases.. my top jaw is that much out of line you can hardly see my top teeth.. when i close my mouth my tough lies over my teeth.. u can not notice its a jaw issue with my mouth shut.
yes only my two back teeth meet left side (only two teeth) so as u can imagine its not nice

but when i was 17 my ortho said to me braces will help... 5 years on... nothing.. no change.. so it has takin all this time for a new ortho i saw (and 2 others in a space of a month) to tell me.. i need jaw surgery and brace wont help me at all..
hence gettin the refural...
would a ortho refer u to nhs if i was not a good case? ..
i do feel that it would be very odd if they did refuse me.. as to me this is a deformancy.. and i did not choose to look this way.. i may sound like a sad case.. but this is how it is..
my family think i need a shrink..they just dont understand..
anyway...
i understand it will be a very long road.. but as long as things are moving and they say yes to treatment on the 15th least it will help me with how i am feeling..
how was your bite when they first saw you?

Its a long one for alot of us. So you get braces on first to prep the teeth and get htem in place. You have the surgery with braces on, then after surgery the braces are kept on to make minor adjustments.
thank you for explaning....
this is going to be one long journey..
Im having surgery this Thursday Oct 1.
Now I just want to get 2-3 weeks past the surgery.
Dont worry.. Time will keep on moving, and it will pass.

did you have to pay for your op? is it lower jaw ur havin done u say?
Yes its my lower jaw surgery, I had some pictures posted of what I was to look like after the surgery but I took them down. 150 views and only 2 replies.sarah1985 wrote: great.. will look out for the pics

I think my friends know I have an overbite, I know they know it infact. Like anyone with a overbite I try to hide it pretty well.
My braces did help a whole lot and my Ortho even said my overbite would only be about 2 mm when he was done with me.
My insurance is covering everything for the surgery part, im damn grateful about that. I have to pay for my Genio 1700 and my splint 200-300 I cant remember. I have allready paid for both.
I do know other costs will come up and Im prepaired for that. I have been working alot of overtime and put away a great deal of money to cover most anything that comes up.
Remember when you go to your OS, there is no stupid question.. NONE.
Ask away, because the more you know the better you will feel about the surgery.
The only one thing I really didnt want to hear from my OS is that I have to stay off my jetski's for 4 months. Not sure about the weather in the UK but here in Galveston Texas (USA) we pretty much ride year round.
