I had my one month post-op with the OS today and briefly mentioned your case. He told me he did not put any plate in my jaw, just screws. That was interesting to know, I thought I had plate and screws but I was wrong. I guess different surgeons do it different ways.

Hang in there, I'm sure you'll start to feel better soon.

I'm so anxious about my appointment today. On one hand I hope the Ortho is able to do everything he wants to do even though I'm still having discomfort and still have stitches. On the other hand I don't want anymore pain!!

I've read about surgeons using both miniplates w/ screws and just screws alone. I guess it's a surgical preference?

My concern is if there can be any relapse now that the plate & screws have been removed, even though he said the bone was already healing nicely. Hopefully I'll get an answer that puts me at ease this afternoon when I see my OS after my Ortho appointment. I'm just now 10 weeks post-op...hard to believe I'm already minus a miniplate & screws on one side! 8)

My surgeon & orthodontist had met prior to my appointment yesterday so that my OS could go over my recent plate removal surgery with him. They decided to let me heal another 2 weeks before doing any orthodontic treatment. :D My orthodontist was sooooo nice and it just reminded me of why I chose him in the first place! He went over everything with me in detail explaining exactly what is going on with my bite right now and what he needs to do to correct it. And reassured me that the surgery itself was a success and no further jaw surgery will be necessary. Whew, what a relief! Once he explained it, everything makes sense. Since the surgery I've developed both a crossbite and slight open bite on the right side, both of which will be corrected with elastics. As far as the openbite, the back top & bottom molar need to be making better contact. My midline is now off appx. 1-2 mm (looks like more to me), but he said he can also tweek that towards the end of treatment. Yay!

As far as my plate removal surgery follow-up, the OS said everything is healing nicely. He assured me that the bone was solid when he went in to take the plate out and that removing the plate will not cause any sort of relapse. He said that basically after the first 6-8 weeks the plates & screws aren't of any benefit. More good news!!!

I can finally say I'm on the mend and things are looking up! Would I do it over again? Absolutely!

That is good news! You've had a rough time so I'm glad it's finally working out for you. Blessings on your recovery!
