what can you eat or drink right after surgery

#1 Post by candycin »

I am having my bottom jaw moved forward and my top jaw widened and titled up, and most likely genio and want to start pick up things that i will be able to eat(drink) after surgery. Any ideas of what i should purchase now? Also how much weight do people generally lose?

hi candycin- congrats on having surgery! I am 12 Days post op from having double jaw surgery and cheek augmentations...I have been on a no-particle, liquid only diet. I have been living off of juice, boost, special-k drinks w/protein, chicken broth, water, Gatorade, milkshakes, and tea. It's particle free so nothing gets in the incisions to cause infection. It really hasn't been too hard, just make sure you take in enough calories and stay hydrated! At least 2-3 liters a day!

I hope this helps! I graduate to a different diet this week, so this will all change...not sure what I'll be eating....I find out tomorrow at the doctor.

Good Luck with your surgery!

Hi Candycin,

I am preparing for the same surgery as you (upper jaw, lower jaw, possible upper jaw enlargement, and possible chin - same questions as you on the chin by the way, seeing my surgeon on Wednesday, will decide then). My surgery is in one week, Nov. 23, 2009 in Toronto, ON.
I already had surgery when I was 17.
The first few days will be strictly liquid diet. Then I remember that I was able to slide thin slices of almond paste (marzipan is another name) in between my teeth, which provided me with sugar and calories. I lost too much weight the first time (20 lbs-10 kgs) in 2 weeks, I have to do better this time.
But be ready for a lot of smoothies, soups, add protein powder to them if you can, peanut butter is also a good option I have seen on this forum.
But again, my first surgery was a long time ago, so I am waiting for my surgeon's recommendations.
Wasn't able to get Zip and Squeeze bags either, so I bought a squeeze bottle (at Dollarama), and cut the tip off to make it slightly bigger. Hope it works...
Take care, hope you're better than me at dealing with the rising stress... :D

i called every medical store here and no such thing
going to get a couple of syringes from a friend of mine that works in the hospital to use to squirt fluids in my mouth....

candycin- i didn't worry about getting anything fancy...I was advised not to use syringes or anything of the sort because of the risk of choking and of opening the stitches. I used sippy cup and a plastic up. It really wasn't very difficult to adjust to using a plastic cup. I used a mirror for the first few days. For the sippy cup I cut the little slit in the sippy part so it was open. I found the sippy cup to be great for my thinner liquids and the small plastic cup was perfect for my protein drinks (ensure, boost, etc.). You do not touch the elastics, the liquid will just pour in around and make it's way through the gaps in your teeth. I didn't even think about it, it just happened. I think the best thing you can do is to relax and just trust that when you drink it will go down. I still drink with a towel on my chest and a washcloth in my hand because I always spill at least a little. On loosing weight, I lost 12lbs in my first week post op. I gained 20lbs before surgery, so I am also pleased about losing it. Again, I hope this helps! Relax, and simple is better...sippy cup and plastic cup. No need for syringes or zip n' squeeze bags.
