Class III underbite surgery

#1 Post by cari04 »

Has anyone ever had to go through this? What was it like? How long and what all does your treatment include?

Just beginning treatment for my underbite

#2 Post by DIANE »

Hello, I'm new to this website and messageboards. I'm 47 and have an underbite. I will be getting braces on in July and my surgery will be next summer. I will be having a BSSO (Bilateral Sagittal Split Osteotomy) and possible LeFort I (Maxillary) Osteotomy, but my surgeon isn't sure the maxillary procedure will be needed. I have a jet measuring 5 mm, so my surgeon will be setting back my jaw 7 mm. ///// Diane

Hey, i too had an underbite....i had an expander in the third grade went on to have braces all of middle school then went and had surgery before my ninth grade year.....my underbite was 11 mm off so it was really bad....the surgery...not gonna lie to ya was TERRIBLE the end resuls were amazing and it was so weird the first thing i said was "I think i have an overbite" because it was so weird to have my top teeth forward! THe pain was bad and it took about six months for all of the swelling to go down...i've been through about everything so if you have any questions just post back to me!

ah thank you so much for your reply. i dont get the surgery until next summer, but i am terrified. i have never had any surgery. i have only had braces for three days, but i am taking them pretty well. they are no big deal. it's the surgery im worried about... so is it worth it?

Cari04, there is a Yahoo group called Orthognatic Surgery Support at http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/or ... rysupport/.
It is a very active group. Helped me a lot when I was preparing for my surgically assisted rapid palatal expansion last fall.
There are also "before and after" picture galleries of people who have had jaw surgery.
Good luck!
Case: Impacted canines, crowding & crossbite.
Treatment: SARPE 2004/10/6, RPE 2004/9/28 - 2005/1/31, w-arch until 2005/11/22, impacted canines extracted 2005/5/18.
Braces on: top 2005/6/2, bottom 2005/8/30.
Braces off: 2008/6/9.
Retainers, phase one: expanding Hawley retainer 24/7, bonded retainers on top & bottom.
Retainers, phase two: Hawley on top, bonded both top & bottom, positioner for night time use.
