Debanding with a shifted midline? Did it happen to anyone?

#1 Post by DotCat »

Hello,

I should be debanded at the end of March 2010, but one of my molar bands just broke and slipped off and we stand before a problem. I could be debanded sooner, but my teeth are not perfect and my upper midline is still shifted by a milimeter or two. The last time I talked to my doctor, he said he would keep the midline as it is and take the bands off if it does not bother me too much. I wanted to keep the elastics until the debanding date in march to see it it does not shift at leas a little more after all (even though my midline stubbornly refuses to move).

What would you do? Have the braces taken off with and live with a slightly shifted midline, or have them cement the band back on?

I am very tempted to have them taken off so that I can have my next surgery sooner than planned. :)

NO, NO, NO-don't be tempted to take those braces off! Keep them on until you get the results you planned for. My ortho told me last month that her treatment was complete and that because of other issues regarding muscle atrophy and screws needing to be removed she would leave them on until she felt more comfortable with my progress. She switched my elastics from 24 to 12 hours a day and within a month I had a slight relapse in my bite. I told her I was in no rush to remove braces. Our muscles have memory and need to be trained to stay put. Please know this process takes time-and for some of us, alot longer than we anticipated! I'v decided my braces make this 44 year old look much younger-lol-I'm thinking of keeping them on indefinately!

okay, something I have been wondering for a while, I keep hearing "shifted midine." Does it mean the two top front teeth are not exactly aligned with the two bottom teeth? Or that the entire jaw is moved too much to the side? If it's just a teeth issue, wouldn't it be easily corrected with braces? Is it the same as a "cant?" Thanks, I am confused about this.

trish222: Well, my treatment should be at the end anyway, because the doc said they usually keep them on for about 6 months post-op and its now 7 post-op with almost year in braces before the surgery. Orthos and maxfac surgeons did an amazing job on my mouth, its just the upper midline - a problem that just did not want to be resolved. We made it smaller with rubber bands, but its not perfectly in the middle and the ortho thinks it is such a small problem that we might remove the braces anyway. Now its a question if to keep trying to shift it or just give up and move to the last part of my surgeries. Honestly, I do not know - I want to have a perfect bite if possible, but I also want the braces down and move to my last surgery.

srs: It means the middle of your 2 front teeth is not exactly in the middle of your face. For example when I smile, it is visible the teeth on a whole jaw are moved a little more to right and both sides of the jaw are not the same width. (It has also probably something to do with the fact that I am missing one tooth on the left side, so they can not be the same anyway). I hope I am making some sense.

I would probably try to get the midline shifted if it's possible. I always figure once you're going through so much treatment anyway, you might as well go the whole way. But honestly, very few people will probably notice if it's not perfectly aligned. My midline is currently very off but I wouldn't have noticed if my dentist hadn't kept mentioning it.

Hmm, I asked few people around and they said they did not notice until I mentioned it, so its probably not so bad. I would post a pic, but I do not have a camera right now.

This is my teeth about 3 months ago (and 4 months post-op) and now the midline is a tiny bit better, but close to this:

I remember seeing your before and after pix-great results and you are right not noticeable to anyone but us who have actually gone through all this craziness and even with that I can't really tell from pix. Continued success and prayers to you!

So, do you think that debanding now might not be a bad choice?

Doctor says my right side is perfect, but the left side sort of collapsed after surgery and even though it got better after ortho treatment, its still noticeable. They said if I am not too bothered with it, I could get the braces off in march. So, definitively not perfect, but the idea of having the damn thing off is too tempting.

(I hope I am making sense, I am not native and really tired now.)

Judging from that picture, I don't think anyone but a dentist would notice your midline is off.

Thanks, DotCat, now I know that the midine shift means.
