For those who have had GENIOPLASTY

I would love to hear from those who had genioplasty and how your recovery was, i dont really know what to expect in terms of pain, swelling etc will i be able to smile, talk, eat? How did you feel right after surgery? Did you notice results straight away?

How did you feel right after surgery? Did you notice results straight away? You will for sure notice results right away. The genio that I had is what really changed my whole face in the end. Prior to surgery I had a long face, not so much after.

Any kind of information would be great. I didn't really have any pain, but my genio was coupled with double jaw surgery so recovery took quite a while.

No pain in jaw or chin. Did have pain from very sore throat, from tube that goes down the throat. Very slight headache for two days. Was up and around the next day after surgery. No nausea. Had moderate swelling with pretty color bruises. Eggplant color, yellow, blue. Had red rash on chin from allergy to dressings and tape. Numb in lower lip for a year.

Helen, are you saying that it took about a year to regain feeling in your lower lip as a result of the genio?

No. Only a small part of lower lip was numb. It was minor and it kept improving. Pretty minor. Some numbness is common and some people have it for a few months, some for a year like I had. What I had done was well worth it and if I had known about this beforehand, it never would have stopped me because of all the benefit from the surgery.
I'm one of those who had some sleep apnea and this surgery helped open up my airway. This too is somewhat common with genioplasty. The surgery pulls tongue foward so it doesn't block airway like it did. Also I have no trouble closing my mouth now, and I did before.

Jersey, are you saying the genioplasty alone helped your breathing and lip closure?

Absolutely. Ideally I should have had upper and lower jaw surgery, including BSSO. But my surgeon told me that because my tempero-mandibular joints were in such bad shape, and I was age 79, all that was not such a good idea. I should have had the works, upper, lower, genio when I was much younger, but I did not have a supportive family and I was afraid of the surgery.
But it's true that genioplasty alone addresses an airway that is blocked by the back of the tongue and better breathing helps keep the mouth closed. Many of us have deviated septums and nasal allergies and they interfere with our breathing too.

Wow, that's amazing! I'm asking because I had lower jaw surgery in 2008, only to find out I should have had upper jaw surgery, too. I still am faced with poor breathing (through my nose), recessed chin and a bit of lip incompetence. I'm 48 yrs old, so did not elect to go through another surgery because of the risk of more nerve damage (I still have some numbness). None of the surgeons I've gone to has ever said genioplasty would help (breathing wise and lip wise) and I've even gone to the "top gun" guy in Santa Barbara. I sleep with my mouth more open now then I did before my surgery which really disappoints me.

I have an article from "Sleep and Breathing", vol. 7, no. 4, 2003 - Improvement of Facial Apearance and Nocturnal Breathing with Geniotomy (Sliding Genioplasty): Report of Two Cases by Manolis J. Papagrigorakis, D.D.S., M. Sc., et al. It's 8 pages long. An orthodontist I saw told me genioplasty cannot help sleep apnea. There is such ignorance in this world, even among some medical professionals. Here's a scientific article by 5 Greek Doctors and dentists in a medical journal that would disagree with that orthodontist.

Thanks Helen and Esoteric, its reassuring to hear there isnt a lot of pain involved with chin surgery. My chin will actually be moved 6mm to the left rather than forwards like most genios

I had genioplasty two years ago, and as Helen -I should have had an upper and lower jaw surgery (open bite). But my surgeon thought that my face was harmonic and that we should drop it and just go for a genio (to "hide" the bite). and that it would help for my lip incompetence. But it has not.. I was very satisfied in the beginning. but now I feel like I should have taken the harder route -cause I still can't close my lips without forcing a bit. There's only that much a genio can do.

But -the recovering of my genio was great -no numbness at all. I was good again after 1-2 weeks. It was amazing! and it has made be more beautiful! I just feel that it only helped my looks, but not my bite and breathingproblems.(as I new, I just went for the easiest way)

I had a reduction genio this morning. I am all numb and swollen but otherwise I feel really normal. So far I can't see the proper results but my long, asymmetrical chin was reduced by about 4mm so I expected a pleasant result. Um... I can't really talk. My lip and mouth are too swollen (I also got my wisdom teeth out at the same time so this may be why). Just drinking lots of fluids right now though I can eat jelly and soft things (but its a bit hard). Nothing too difficult though and I"m just relaxing.

I've had lower jaw surgery and sliding genioplasty. No pain, didn't take painkillers once after I got home. Quite some swelling (hamster look) and blue/yellow face and neck. I was very nauseous after the operation and threw up allover the bed. Twice. My stomach was pumped before I woke up but the blood which collected in my stomach after surgery made me sick. Since I was banded shut, I couldn't open my mouth to throw up so I sprayed with amazing force allover the bed. The puke even hit the end of the bed. Felt much better after that

I actually had a sliding genio because my chin was too strong. I would have had a witch chin if I hadn't done the genio. Since this part was purely cosmetic, I had to pay for it myself. 5000 bucks. Well worth it.
