Is surgery on anti-depressants safe??

#1 Post by kaysha19 »

Hey I am considering going back on anti-depressants, but I haven't had the chance to ask my surgeon if it is safe to be on them during surgery. I have tried to research it and there are so many different opinions. Has anyone had surgery on anti-depressants, or has anyone been warned about it?

I can't comment specifically about anti-depressants, but I was on Xanax leading up to the surgery. Honestly I am not sure I would have made it to the OR without it...

I know everybody has an opinion on anti-depressants, but what I would do is ask your OS to consult one of the anesthesiologists that they work with and get their personal recommendation.

The important thing is that when it comes time to do the surgery, that you tell your OS and the anesthesiologist EVERYTHING you are on.

Good Luck!

I had surgery while on my antidepressants. Yes, be sure to tell the anesthesiologist. Your pre-op nurse/doctor will also need to know so they can crush them up and give them to you while you're recovering in the hospital.
