Lower Jaw Surgery in RI/Southern MA

#1 Post by humorme »

I am trying to find a good jaw surgeon in the Rhode Island/Southern Massachusetts area. I need someone who can perform outpatient surgery since i have to pay for this completely out of pocket. Would appreciate if someone would recommend a good jaw surgeon in the area that they have had prior experience with.

Thanks,
HM

I haven't been here in some time so it's pretty funny that I came across your post. I happen to live in Rhode Island and had my surgery done back in January. My surgeon was Dr. Martin Elson, whose office is located in Cranston, RI. I assure you that I was (and still am) beyond satisfied with choosing him. My surgery was not outpatient--I had both jaws done and stayed for two nights. I would assume that it's up to the surgeon in such a case, but it doesn't hurt to look around and do some research.
Feel free to PM me if you'd like to know anything else.

Dr. Martin Elson

Thank you for your response. Great to hear that your surgery went well and that you are happy with the results. I looked up some information about
Martin Elson and found some unflattering reviews. Not sure if i should read too much into them though.

Does the surgeon have a website. Were you recommended to him by someone else?

Personally, I have never experienced any problems with him or his staff. They have always been very courteous and inviting and made every visit as comfortable as possible. Keep in mind, too, in my case many of my appointments were long and it is expected that there will be short waiting periods. I've been seeing the doctor since my wisdom teeth extraction in 2008, during which time I was recommended to him by my dentist. I chose to see him again for my jaw surgery because my first experience was great and, as I mentioned, so was the staff.
His website is http://www.omsltd.org/. Like I said in my previous post, it doesn't hurt to look around more either.

Cost and before/after x-rays/pics

#5 Post by humorme »

Can i know how much it cost in total for your jaw surgery? Like i mentioned before, i will have to pay for this out of pocket and am a little concerned about the total cost of surgery. I saw a surgeon in the Mass General Hospital in Boston, and the cost estimate they gave me was 4 times the estimates i got from a surgeon in Atlanta as well as an other surgeon here in Rhode Island. Also, did you happen to post your before and after pics/x-rays anywhere on this website?

I'm not sure if I'm allowed to share that publicly, so I'll PM you. It'd depend on the procedure, so the cost of mine may (or may not :?) be extremely different than that of yours. I assume you've already had your case evaluated, so you'll have a general sense compared to mine (double jaw to correct an underbite).
My before and after pictures are not up, but I believe they may be once I'm finally debanded (most likely within the next few months).

hi humorme,
I live in RI and had upper, lower and genio 11 months ago by Dr. Anthony Petito. I'm very happy with results. I had alot of post-op difficulties but none that could be attributed to him or his care. My body rejected some of the hardware. I also know a family that had Dr. Ray English and they, too, were very happy with their results. Their child had surgery five years ago and are still pleased with results as is the child, who is now in college.
I had to stay in hospital two nights as well and my out of pocket costs were about 10k, not including my ortho work, but the additional genio work was in there. My OS does about one of these surgeries per week-according to his staff. Good luck with your decision. I wish I knew how to post before and after pix but I'm somewhat of a dope when it comes to computers.

No luck with BU humorme?

have you thought about going international? Interestingly, I recently found out that Dr. Reiche in Costa Rica and Dr. Mehra trained in the same fellowship with Dr. Wolford at Baylor and have published papers together.

BTW -- I just got back from Riz installing the surgical hooks...less than 24 hours for me!
