People that have had their wisdom teeth puled and surgery

#1 Post by James0099 »

Just wondering on a scale 1-10, 10 being the most pain what would you rate what you felt like when you had your wisdom teeth pulled and what you felt like after the surgery.

0... honestly i got my Wisdom tooth remove on sedation by an oral surgeon and i had Zero pain. I got SARPE which is another surgery and i got Zero pain. I had my 4 premolar removed i got 1 on a scale of 10 because the hole are aching really lightly just enough to bother.

I had a more complicated case with my wisdom teeth, in that they were impacted and one even had some root wrapped around my jawbone. So I had full anesthesia for that. I had a bad reaction to my pain meds at the time, and so I just didn't take anything. I was 15 at the time (26 now), and honestly don't remember the pain being bad. Maybe a 3/10 at the highest.

I also had 4 premolars extracted before braces this time, and I was awake for those. Had all 4 done at once, and I'd say the pain from that was 1-2/10.

I must have a high tolerance for pain, because my highest pain rating post-surgery was a 6/10, and that was when I was still in the hospital and had a sore throat from the breathing tube on top of the regular pain associated with double jaw surgery. After the sore throat and major swelling went away, I didn't experience much pain, more like pressure that I didn't like with occasional mild pain.

I took all the pain meds that were prescribed to me during the premolar extractions and the jaw surgery. I just spaced the doses out as far as possible and took the lowest amount possible (and took ibuprofen between doses). I'm not one to allow the pain to become too bad that it's difficult to get rid of...plus I know the effects pain/stress can have on healing, and it just wasn't worth the risk to be "tough."

So, all in all, jaw surgery is definitely worse than having your wisdom teeth removed, even if your wisdom teeth are difficult like mine were. That doesn't mean that it's unbearable or anything though.

Reason I started this thread was to try and estimate what I should expect from my surgery. Some people told me that getting their wisdom teeth was bad, they were really swollen and had to take pain medicine.

When I had mine taken out, I didn't swell up much and I didn't have to take any of the pain medicine they gave me as I had no pain.

I know everyone is different with how their pain is, so I was just wondering what people who had both would rate them. I know the surgery is going to be more painful, since its much more invasive.

The surgeon who pulled my wisdom teeth will also be doing my surgery. I had 4 pulled and 2 were impacted, I was knocked out for it.

Yeah, I've noticed a lot of people overestimate the severity of having their wisdom teeth out. But, then again, a lot of people can't tolerate a lot of dental work/pain. It's never bothered me much (luckily, since I've had so much done over the years...).

Another thing you'll get a lot of after your surgery is people comparing orthognathic surgery to having their wisdom teeth removed...I've given up on trying to set them straight. :D

Sounds like you're a lot like me, so I'm sure you'll do just fine after surgery. The thing that helped me most is knowing what to expect in those first few days/weeks after surgery. Knowing that what I was experiencing was normal and that it was going to get better really helped. Also, drinking lots of water and other liquids and keeping ice on constantly the first 48 hours really made a huge difference in how quickly my swelling went down.

Seriously, maybe a 2. My whole mouth was numb until about 7pm, and I had my surgery at 8am, with 2 wisdoms and 4 molars surgically taken out. The most discomfort for me anyway, wasn't pain at all. It was my jaw. It was pretty stiff from them taking them out, my girlfriends was the same. It took about a week before I could open my mouth as wide as I could before, and eating took a while. But hardly any pain was there.

I freaked out about the surgery beforehand, even though I had IV sedation. It was so easy and really was no big deal. I think the worst pain was feeling the drugs go in the IV. That part kind of felt like being punched in the arm for a few seconds, and even that was only maybe a 5.

I think getting my wires changed at adjustments hurts way worse at the time than anything from that surgery.

I had my one wisdom tooth taken out during my jaw surgery... I'm so glad I them at the same time. My tooth wasn't impacted or anything and so having my surgeon take it out was optional. And I honestly don't think I even FELT the wisdom tooth pain that most people usually have, because the actual jaw surgery made the entire region numb.

wisdom teeth

I had surgery to take my wisdom teeth out because they were all impacted. I had a ton of swelling in my face and couldn't close my mouth all the way. It really hurt when I ate, but I don't thing the pain was too bad because I've had way more painful things happen to me before.
