How to clear throat of mucus?

#1 Post by attackred »

I just had jaw surgery on Friday and I've been coughing it up and sucking it out with an aspirator from my mouth. It's been painful. Any tips so I don't have to deal with this?

Thanks.

I took a syringe with a long tip (zip-n-squeeze works well too). Filled it with water, and tried to drink as much as I could. I noticed the water, even though you cant gargle it, will help clear most of that annoying mucous from the back on your throat as you swallow. It wont get all of it, but will get enough of the annoying sludge to make it a little more tolerable.

MetalMedic's suggestion for drinking a lot of water is very good...I actually think I didn't have a lot of mucus because I drank so much water from the moment I could after surgery and all through my recovery. (It also helps the swelling to go down).

If you're not loving having water yet, I know that sometimes carbonated drinks can help clear my throat when I'm sick or whatever. Ginger ale is good to use, as it can also help with any nausea that you may have (I think Canada dry is the only one that has real ginger root in it that will help with nausea though).

Hope these suggestions help you so you don't have to deal with this any longer!

Two things that work really well for getting rid of the mucous are:

7-up (not sprite. 7-up works better)
lemonade

both worked really well for me after my surgery, and I thanked profusely the people who recommended them to me.

The only thing with the carbonated soda I would say be careful of is the sugar. I know that from personal experiences, sodas with sugar in it that sit in my mouth leave a yucky film and eventually a mucous. This is one of the only times I would drink a diet soda. Other that that, good idea as well!

Water though, is you're best friend. I always keep a cup close by with a syringe.
