I will be travelling abroad also seven weeks after my surgery (tomorrow). If they move it again everything will be ruined and I'll have to find something else to do
I'll cross my fingers for us!

My last post made me sound like a ungrateful teenager. My surgery was already moved before. I had been promised week seven, but then my dentist hadn't done something properly enough and I had to wait. Ok, fine. Then it was supposed to take place 1st of june; the day of my first finale exam. Then it should have been yesterday.. Happily, I'm the first on the list for tomorrow.
Good luck with it!VikingGirl wrote:My last post made me sound like a ungrateful teenager. My surgery was already moved before. It's lucky that you found out about the surgery list the day before! I found out today that they won't tell me until the morning of the surgery.
Had my pre-op today! I'm now 5 vials of blood lighter and 90% more prepared for all of this. <3 my surgical team.

I'm on day 2 after surgery (I don't count the surgery day) and so far I'm fine. Swelling is the same as yesterday and I can't feel too much of my mouth/lower face. My right side is more numb than the left. I've been able to use the syringe and sippy cups for meals. I'm sticking with ensure, instant breakfast and chicken broth. I'll get brave later tonight and try my baby food with a baby spoon.
I wish all of my July buddies good luck. I came out fine so I'm confident all you will as well.

After Surgery
Hi guys... Its been 1 week since the date of my surgery. I had bi-maxillary so both jaws were operated on. Luckily my teeth havent been wired together but banded although I can still only manage using a syringe to eat.
I was finding it very tough while in the hospital because of the non-solid diet as normally I rarely drink milk and now thats all my diet is. At points I felt quite ill. I have now moved on to drinking actimel - a probiotic drink and having strained soup. Do any of you have any other suggestions to what I could eat??
My swelling has dramatically reduced in just a week - which im suprised about..however I am concerned that my nose doesn't seem straight. Has anyone else had this problem?
Any questions please ask

My digestive system took a real hit the first week after surgery, as I don't drink a lot of milk either, and in general, it was just really hard to adjust to all liquids.
Do you have any protein powder? I bought some, and I make a shake out of the following ingredients which is pretty yummy - soy milk, scoop of protein powder, big spoonful of almond butter, spoonful of cocoa, a splash of vanilla and some honey. I also have a juicer (I find it really handy after this surgery), and I have made many, many juices consisting of carrots, celery, plums, apples, and canteloupe, with some lemon and ginger thrown in. If you feel like it, you can throw some protein powder in with that too.
I also now am doing up mashed potatoes, and blending them to death along with chicken broth/veggie broth or gravy (you may have to add a lot to thin it down), and syringing that in.
I also had both jaws done, and from my upper jaw surgery, my nose is a bit wider and is slightly more crooked (not too badly, but I can notice it a bit.) There is also some swelling/possible deviated septum in one nostril which makes my nose appear more crooked as well. I'm hoping this settles down over time, but it may end up being a small price to pay for what was done.
I'm now 2.5 weeks post op, and you will find it does get easier, and this is coming from someone who is still completely splinted and heavily banded for 4 weeks minimum, so no movement whatsoever! Although I do question everything that goes on, and the numbness and sensations freak me out, as well as worrying that everything is OK in there!

Thats really helpful thanks very much.
About the protein powders the hospital gave me their version of the shakes, however i just really hate milkshakes haha. ive tried some fruit juices but they are sore on my tounge because its dried out from not being able to breathe through my nose properly.
Yea hopefully in a week or so when i have the wafer removed i can start eating mash and soft things like that. i'll still be banded though so i doubt i'll have much movement either. Although I have got some... have you got none at all???
Yea about your nose... I spoke to my orthodontist today and they said it may be due to the stiches that are inside, but they said if its still the same after the swelling they will straighten it for me.
I know what you feel about the feeling of it... my chin feels like constantly tickly pins and needles... makes me quite dizzy sometimes but im sure that will get better as my cheeks are better even after a week!!
Another thing.. I can't seem to stop dribbling and producing a lot of saliva... particularly on one side. Do you have this trouble??
Hope your ok and keep me posted about how things turn out... your advice was helpful

I can relate to how you feel - I found I got sick of the sweet shakes and nutritional drinks pretty quickly so you have to get creative. For the first few days, I stayed away from juices because I got canker sores on my tongue that I couldn't get to, so I rinsed my mouth with salt water about 5 times a day and that really helped. (I still do this)
Yes, I have no movement at all. Going on 3 weeks like this. I guess my surgeon is pretty conservative and wanted my jaws to be immobilized for a few weeks as they did some pretty extensive work on my upper jaw. It's made it quite the experience! Everything is measured in time, and there's a very good chance I'll get the splint out and heavy duty bands off at 4 weeks; that's what I'm hoping for!
It's interesting - everyone definitely heals differently and has different side effects from this surgery. I found that I didn't actually have a ton of saliva and didn't end up drooling a whole lot. I also didn't have any nosebleeds or cough up any blood which I know can happen after surgery as well. I did have a lot of congestion though in the first week and a half, and I lived off of Breathe Right Strips (not sure where you're located, if you have them where you are), I found they opened up my sinuses immensely.
