JULY 2010 BUDDIES!!!!
Moderator: bbsadmin
Came back from hospital today. Things went as planned with surgery (mouth is not closed but rubber banded).
Still I'm so much annoyed by all the accompanied soreness (burn when I pee, dry mouth and nose, congestion problems, tiredness, exhaustion, swallowed face, face pain, lip pain from surgical hooks, numbness, already developed strong hate for Ensure...).
At day 5 post-op, I find myself amazed at how well we live our lives (when healthy) without even notice.

Noam.
Hey everyone, I'm now day 6 and feeling great. My surgery was less than an hour and a half(!!! - there was almost 10mm of movement). My surgeons were incredible! I don't even have any numbness (touch wood, don't want to get too hyped).
Anyway just wanted to let you guys know I'm happily on the other side. My mum and I can't believe how well it's going; even the sleeping is no big deal, I wake up maybe once in the night. Eating is mighty irritating though, I almost hate meal times because the sight of a bowl of blended soup is making me want kick the table.
You must all buy a V-Pillow, it's a sleeping saviour.
I had a few problems with my bottom teeth going into the wafer/splint, but have since had my bands tightened so it feels good so far. I have had a few problems with pain, but it's not bothering me tooooooooo much really.
I don't want to jynx it, but I really do feel great. I keep thinking that if I didn't look like I have been stung by a mutant, giant wasp, I'd be happily out and about.
Hope you are all doing well also!

I have my first post op visit tomorrow, I'm excited. I want to ask him what I can do to clean my mouth because it is gross, my tong is really slimmy and my teeth feel dirty. I brush them but I can't clean the inside as I am wired shut.
The splint is a pain, my tong has a sore on it from rubbing against it.
The liquid diet is horrible, I hate it, I forget what it feels like to be full as the best I get is not hungry but I can feel my stomach getting less hungry as time goes as it gets used to this.
Besides medication complications which I was having side effects that made me struggle to sleep, only got like maybe a hour sleep a day and made my heart beat fast constantly and made me restless. Got off of it and now I am sleeping great at night which is amazing.
I haven't had any problems, no pain at all the entire time, just a little sore but never enough to need pain medication. No numbness at all, felt everything from right after surgery.
My face is still really swollen though and being wired shut sucks, I want to be able to talk clearly and want to just open my mouth, the constant pressure of my mouth being shut is so annoying. I just hope my bones heal fast to get out of this as soon as possible, I would love to be on a soft foods diet. What really sucks is its only day 6, I have 3-5 weeks left of this!!

I use a tiny toothbrush and a toothpick! Just be gentle and it'll be no problem!
Glad to hear that it's going so great (well mostly) for all of you!
14 days left of wafer and rubberbands (the the original idea was for me only to be banded shut for 14 days, but the hospital thought for dentist was a little too modern about it (I've had segmented lefort 1) and therefor they left all the stuff in my mouth.

James0099,
I just wanted to reassure you that it's all worth it and then some once the bands come off and the splint comes out. I was in the same scenario as you - I am 5 weeks post op and my bands came out last week at 4 weeks and the splint came out today. I'm now in elastics for the long haul. The first couple of weeks are definitely the hardest, it gets easier as time goes by, and then before you know it, the gear starts to come out.

Thank you for your replies! I guess it's a very varied matter.
I was just a bit worried because today at the hospital, one of my surgeons said I might have mine out tomorrow...! Maybe, maybe, depends on the ortho, but I was thinking 4-5 weeks as well initially. He even took all my bands out today, I was really shocked.
p.s. bb you're lucky!
p.p.s. It's a good thing actually, as I was just brushing my teeth I think I may have knocked it slightly! I'm getting a bit too vigorous with brushing because I can't feel my top gums, haha.
