Back to normalcy 3 weeks after surgery?????

#1 Post by cocomecrazy »

I need to read other people's experiences in this forum about going back to school/work.

School is tres importante, but I've been waiting for this surgery to happen since I started becoming conscious about my asymmetrical face due to my under bite and cross bite.

I'm just wondering, how long did it take for some people here to recover well enough to get back to school?

I don't care about bruising because I know I can cover it up with make up. I care about being able to communicate with peers and teachers and co-workers, and I definitely care about how my mouth smells like to people. And of course, energy levels to get some business done.

My surgery is on October 14. I'm excited, at the same time scared the poo out of it because missing a lot in school.

I go to college, I'm taking 6 classes, I already told my professors on the first day of class. My friend is going to audio record lectures from 3 of my classes, and I'm going to photocopy my teachers' lectures notes.

If I fail to catch up, I already talked to the admissions office and told them about my dilemma. They said they can drop my classes without a record in my transcript saying that I dropped those classes (if not then my record would look really bad) as long as I can give them a note from my surgeon about this surgery.

I really really do not want to drop my classes though :( I don't want to waste a semester.

Please, folks, I wanna hear your experiences if you have/had similar case.

What kind of surgery are you getting? Lower jaw only? Upper and lower? Your recovery time is going to be dictated by the extent or your jaw surgery. I've been on this board for the last few months and read about people taking as little as a few days (to be able to talk) to a few weeks. Despite jaw surgery being relatively routine, it seems like the recovery process varies greatly; although the biggest determining factor IS the kind of surgery you are getting.

I'm getting my lower jaw done to fix asymmetry, underbite, and crossbite. My surgeon said I'll be banded shut for a week so I'm anticipating on returning to work after a week unless I'm super swollen. Talking will probably be limited to close distance, but as a student, I think that would be sufficient if your surgery proceeds like mines.

I agree with the post above.. it really depends on the surgery you are getting etc. etc.

I had lower jaw surgery, but was not banded shut. My surgeon had told me to take 2-3 weeks off work, so I took 2. I probably only needed 1 though, as I felt fine and was off pain killers. I had a bit of leftover bruising, swelling and a slight lisp... but all of this was more noticeable to me than anyone else.
