Bill - get some use out of that Nutella and throw a spoonful in your Ensure (or other shake). Adds calories AND cuts the gross fake milk taste. Eggnog is pretty gross, I agree. No degree of malnutrition will make me drink that :)

I think what you are feeling in your mouth is where your incisions were done for lower jaw. This is where mine are, as well as the 2 small outside incisions. My mucosa is pretty shredded in that region as well and I think it's a combinasion of incisions and also when my swelling was worse, my mucosa actually came between my teeth and was crushed and also all stuck on my braces (yeah, real fun).

My surgeon pretty much told me that I can now eat anything I can smush between my tongue and my palate and swallow without choking (his exact words). As long as I don't use my teeth, Im good to go. I made some chili today, mashed it with a potato masher (with the cheese added) and ate it with a baby spoon. It was GREAT. This is the first meat I had in over 2 weeks and the carnivore I am loved it! I actually had a second serving and am happily FULL. A weird change from just eating enough to not be hungry...

As far as working out - I usually walk/hike/run a good amount and also do Bikram Yoga and I definitively can't do much still. I can't imagine running right now anyways, with the shock going into was jaw at every step, ouch! I try to at least walk my dog down the street a little farther every day! My surgeon did give me the ok to use 3# weights at this point if I feel up to it, after he said "no to weight lifting" and I pestered him enough to say 3# was fine:) (I figure it is fair game for me to pester him during the 15minutes he gives me a week especially after he makes me cry pulling my sutures!)

I went to the mall today (I should disclaim here that i HATE the mall, but I was desperate to get out with a friend!) and I was doing ok for probably 2 hrs then got acutely extremely tired and crashed, came home and parked myself on the couch. I suppose it's a work in progress and I will slowly make it back to normal.

It kinda sucks though to have all this time where I could go workout and get killer abs, but I can't!

Ennazusie - after 1 week I think you are doing extremely well if you even have a thought for exercise! The dizziness gets better but I seem to have days where it's worse than others - like yesterday, every time I got up, it would go all black for a few seconds, had to wait it out before moving. Today, no episodes.

Oh, good to know that my energy level (or lack thereof) is normal. I just kept thinking I'd be able to stand up for more than 5 minutes without feeling like I wanna sit down, but I guess that's just part and parcel, and it'll get better.

I have another question (sorry, it just is so nice to ask people who are a few weeks ahead!): when I talk/smile/etc., one side of my mouth is definitely moving more. I'm assuming that it's because of increased numbness on one side, one side has weaker muscles, etc. It'll even up, right? I won't be talking unevenly forever?

Actually, I realized that I've been posting here a lot in the last week without any formal introductory post. Hi, I'm 25, from NYC, but living in the San Francisco Bay Area, with Kaiser insurance (woohoo! Love it!). I have both linguals (since January) and normal metal braces for the surgery (for the last month, coming off when my mouth opens wide enough). It's a lot of metal, and the linguals are cutting up my tongue a bit as I'm recovering, but luckily my tongue is a bit numb! The linguals will be on until about June, when I'll hopefully be completely done with treatment. I had my upper jaw moved forward and slightly laterally (to correct a crossbite) and my lower law moved back and slightly laterally in the other direction. This was all to correct an underbite, crossbite, and off midlines (both jaws were off, but in different directions, oops). I've been reading this site for about 5 years, on and off, since I knew I'd have to have surgery, but didn't start posting until about a month ago. I think... that covers it!

Bill- I have the same issue inside of my mouth at the same place so must be normal! I have just this week had the courage to really look inside my mouth! At three weeks +2 days the healing where the stitches are seems much better. Hang in there. Plus, how great you have most feeling back in your mouth. The entire roof of my mouth is numb. Feels SO strange to brush!!

As far as the soup goes a few turns in the magic bullet chopped everything up enough for me to eat it. I am not supposed to even be doing much soft chew as the movement in my lower jaw was so extreme the surgeon wants to be sure it is healed more before I put a lot of pressure on it. I am not cleared for chewing until six weeks post op. At least that is the week of Thanksgiving. Anything not nailed down will be fair game! What a week to try to retrain your mouth to eat!

Also, last night I discovered that if I break apart a reese cup enough it melts in your mouth! Delish! Between three bowls of above referenced soup and a reese cup I was in heaven! :D Oh, how I took for granted how great it feels to be full!

I feel everyone's pain on the not working out. I had just finished Insanity a few weeks before surgery. I feel like all of the muscle tone I had gained is now gone

@ennazusie- Wow, that is a lot of metal!! Lucky you to have Kaiser!!

ennazusie - I still can't really "smile". It looks more like a grimace. And I only had lower jaw done, so I asssume it's just the swelling/muscle soreness and it will get better! I wouldnt worry about it for now

Well I was able to find energy to pick up crap and vaccuum my living room today. I was looking forward to a nice warm bath after that - as I turned about to get in the tub EWW the water was brown. Superb. My hot water is brown. Waiting on the plumber now, really just what I need to deal with right now!

Hey Everyone!

Well I am about 5 days post op now and thought I would send a quick update.

Everything went very well, absolutely no nausea....yeah!!!! Swelling and bruising is actually fairly good as well. I am still mostly on liquids but have moved onto some mashed foods so it feels like I am actually eating something real.

I think I overdid it a bit today (ended up in a shoe store.... very dangerous...) so I will have to lay low for the evening.

I think I am a bit different than most here as I actually have invisalign braces (not standard braces) so I am working up to putting them back in tonight.... it's freaking me out a bit but should be fine. (I have 6 screws in my jaw to hold the elastics.)

Anyway, glad to hear everyone is recovering and I looking forward to trying some of the food suggestions.

Cheers, Kara

They unwired me today! It feels SO weird, and I feel really insecure still with my jaw--if feels like it's just flapping around and jolting with every footstep, but at least the elastics are doing a good job holding everything in. My bite isn't great, since I have a few molars that are clashing, but my surgeon seems confident everything will be lined up perfectly in a few months. Woohoo! Hopefully this "my jaw isn't fitting correctly and it's going to fall off at any minute" feeling won't stick around for long.

Since getting unwired, I made it through a little bowl of frozen yogurt (I AM in California, after all), a little bowl of curry with soft tofu, and a little bowl of Spaghetti-Os. SO delicious.

Had my 2 week appointment today! Surgeon said everything is going great, all my sutures are dissolved, and my bite is perfect!

Still 2 more weeks at least of all liquids though :( .

Bill - glad to hear all is going well! Sorry you have to stay on liquids.
It does seem that every surgeon has a different opinions as far as liquid/mushed/soft chews... But hang in there!

I tried ravioli today, cut it in really small pieces, didn't go so well. That is a scratch from the list!

Izzy, I agree that it is odd that each surgeon has their own approach when it comes to diet. In my case, my doc felt like my bones were underdeveloped, so he wants more time on liquids than usual.

As long as things are healing well, I'm happy! I can eat beans, soup, and spaghetti-os, so I'm okay...though I have lost 14 pounds in 2 weeks. I was prepared though, and gained weight, so I've got it to spare!

Oh, I'm jealous--I'm still on all liquids for FOUR MORE WEEKS. Argh. Good thing Halloween came around; I actually enjoy shakes made of candy. Hey, it's calories, right?

So, buddies, we've gotten through our red-letter month! We're all on the other side! Woo-HOO!

And now to bed to nurse my joints (apparently talking with friends all evening is not the best idea quite yet, sigh)...

Izzy, I've been driving since day 6, when I quit my pain meds. Although it seems that I'm moving a little faster than lots of folks when it comes to recovery.

I waited 2 weeks to drive, but I probably could have a bit sooner if I really needed to. I think waiting until you are off of any narcotic pain relievers is certainly prudent.

The first 7 or 8 days I hated being in a vehicle. In fact, the drive home from the hospital was one of the things I feared most. I got through it OK but I can't say I enjoyed it :D

Well I took a leap of faith a drove 5 miles yesterday, went ok!

Another question for those a little farther out... My swelling is much improved, but I still feel very stiff around my mouth, I can't really smile without it looking scary, and talking still isnt normal. When can I expect that to improve?
