Lefort 1 and BSSO without genioplasty??

#1 Post by bracedfaced »

It seems that most having a Lefort 1 and BSSO end up also having genioplasty.

I consulted with 3 surgeons. The first said genioplasty very likely. The second said he would like the option of making that decision during my surgery. And the third said he didn't think I needed it.

I am going with the third surgeon as I like his bedside manner, his patience with me, his explanations, and he was a referral from an acquantaince who had the surgery done 5 years ago and is thrilled with her results.

So anyway, my question is.... How common is it to have a Lefort 1 and BSSO without a genioplasty? I have a pretty large chin to begin with and I fear I will wind up with a Jay Leno chin.

When most people have the genioplasty along with the Lefort 1 and BSSO, is it because they have a receeded jaw that needs to be brought forward? Or because after the Lefort 1 and BSSO, the chin is now pushed forwards and so some of the extra chin needs to be reduced?

Hope my question makes sense...

It sounds like your case is borderline regarding the genioplasty based on what the surgeons said. My surgeon did recommend genioplasty along with Lefort I and BSSO, but I decided against genioplasty and I'm soooo glad I did. I felt my chin was already pointy and I didn't want that more pronounced. The reason my surgeon recommended it was because my profile would still be deficient in the chin area if I didn't have it done. Definitely wouldn't change that decision. Anyway, I don't know how common it is but it certainly happens that people don't get genio.

So, then usually a genioplasty is used to extend the chin? I DEFINITELY don't need that. If anything, I would need it taken back some after the rotation of the mandible. But I prefer not having it at all. I don't want to look different. I just want to be able to eat and bite! I want to look as much like myself as possible. Not that I look great now...but still, I want to look like me. I am 31 years old so I am used to the mug I was born with...

Hey!

I had Lefort I and BSSO last Thursday. My surgeon talked with me in my consultations about the genio options, but he ultimately felt like it was unnecessary. I had a pretty bad underbite and a too-strong chin and jaw, and he felt that by correcting the bite alone we would get the best results. He thinks that once healed, I will still have a strong jaw and chin, which is fine with me (I am also 31, and I have had a strong jaw my whole life, my grandfather did, and it is a classically masculine look anyway).

I was relieved to hear my surgeon not try to push me towards genio... he said he would be willing to do it, but he did not recommend it for aesthetics and that he hoped I was not swayed into doing it by someone else. Now, 6 days post-op, I am happier each hour with the way I look!

Throw me into the "borderline" camp as well. I was given profile predictions with and without the genioplasty right before surgery. I picked the one I thought was best, and that was the one without the genio.

So far, I believe my decision was the right one. My surgeon said my profile was "slightly better" with the genio, but it was ultimately up to me.

I think you should ask your surgeon to work up prediction models with and without, and then you need to pick what you think is best. As long as you do that, I think you'll make the right choice!

Best of luck,

Awesome, thanks guys! I see the surgeon again mid-December so I am compiling a list of things to ask him. My surgery is not until May likely.

Great info fellas. I'm suppose to have Lefort 1, BSSO & genio in a week. I have a severe underbite and a VERY strong chin and jaw line. My surgeon said he'll be moving the bottom jaw so far back that he suggested I go for the genio. So far that is the plan. I think I'll now ask him to show me his predictions without it.

I guess genio could be any change, not necessarily moving the chin forward. I've only ever heard of it being moved forward along with the jaw though. Each case is different.

I'm having my Lefort 1 and BSSO in a week and a half or so and was initially told I was also going to have Genioplasty. However after I had my measurements taken for surgery, the Genioplasty may or may not be performed. It seems now the surgeon won't know if he needs to do the Genioplasty until he breaks my jaws and has them alligned into their new position. I think a Genioplasty is not a given for someone having double jaw surgery but dependent entirely on ones unique situation.

I'm getting Fefort 1 and BSSO next year for an open bite and no one's mentioned my chin at all. I have the classic 'long face syndrome' and had always assumed my chin was to blame, but I'm hoping that once surgery has moved my upper jaw up and lower jaw forward so that I can actually close my mouth properly, the chin will somehow 'work' with the new look. I got very obsessed with my profile at one point, but I realise now that although my chin is long, it doesn't come forward as much as I had thought. I still worry I'll end up with a witch's profile, but I trust the surgeons won't be incompetent enough to make me look worse... and if they do, then I'll be saving up for surgery on the chin that I always thought was the problem before my jaws got the blame!
