cheers changes09.
Yes I do trust my surgeon as he is very realistic and does not make promises he can't keep. That actually appeals to me more rather than someone promising to shape my face exactly how I want it (as if tinkering with the human skeleton is an EXACT science, which it isn't).

Will keep you all updated.

lebron85 wrote:As someone who may also be going undergoing jaw surgery (possibly upper and lower) I have begun to mull over the risks, benefits and general mental well-being of myself before I even consider it a possibility.

As an ethnic person I have quite a prominent nose compared to most people. This is something I have inherited from my mum and I believe adds character (once again this is my belief). I have received negative comments about it, but the people who have directed the comments have done so in a 'bullying' fashion. It does have an effect on me, but I realize these comments were made out of their own insecurity rather than mine. I have considered rhinoplasty but I believe this would change me significantly and detract from any character. Plus its something I can live with as an imperfection.

Anyhoooo, my lower jaw is quite recessed which gives rise to accentuating my nose rather than bringing it into balance. This was mentioned by my orthodontist and I have been talking to a local maxiofacial surgeon about this. I am due to meet him this Saturday to discuss the effects of a lower jaw advancement + genioplasty. Obviously I have realized this will need to be coupled with upper jaw advancement. I haven't got a proper profile pic but I can add it soon.

Any help, tips, thoughts or any discourse would be greatly appreciated.

hi mate,
I highly doubt your condition is bad as you say. I think I'm pretty average looking in my opinion and I guess any improvement to my current bite is welcomed. The operative word is improvement, I think its important for everyone to remember that in their pursuits. Easy to get caught up in the idealization of something unrealistic especially when you go through an operation like this for the first time.

cheers.

Lebron,

You mentioned that you have an occlusal cant? I don't see it. That's what I have and I'll be going through double jaw surgery to fix it as well. Is your left side of your face longer than the right? Your photos are misleading a bit. Good luck with your surgery. It's quite scary to undergo surgery but it's much scarier to endure the rest of your life with jaw misalignments that can be fixed.

Hi RYAN,

My left side is longer than the right. Hard to tell in the photos but its quite apparent and my orthodontist has informed me as such. Its definitely a cant as I have elastics on at the moment in an effort to correct this (not really making a difference as of yet). I agree that my photos are misleading for the cant, a full frontal shot would probably show it better. I'll put one up when I get time.

Cheers.

Man.. Dont know if your case it would be worth it. Your upper and lower jaw dont look that recessed, but honestly, from my experience, you need a TRUE PROFILE view to really analyze that.

Anyway, if I were you, dont play around with just any surgeon. Do your research and throw more money down for the experience. Someone who has done this COMPLEX and COMPLICATION surgery 200..500..1000 times, is a lot better than your average maxfax doctor who has done maybe 100.

KEep that in mind bro!

Hi brendan,

Will be updating my pics shortly. As someone else mentioned, the photos I have up aren't a true representation of the issues I have.

The jaw surgeon I'm seeing has operated on a brother of mine with positive results.
The surgeon I'm seeing is not a run-of-the-mill maxfax surgeon and has carried out complex surgery like mine numerous times a week for the past 10-15 years, I trust his judgment and experience and have discussed with him a number of times the possibilities/most beneficial corrections for my case. It just so happens my case has become a bit more obvious the longer I've had my bracers on (teeth shifting etc).

Obviously I'm not throwing all my money in expecting some perfect outcome, a subtle improvement in my bite is the most likely outcome. Any aesthetic changes may or may not be a bonus.

Thanks for your sentiments, will consider it.

Good to hear! Sounds like he definitely has the experience. In my opinion, reading and all the research I had done prior, the single most important thing I always noticed were that MOST people who were unhappy with their results or had complications, were done by run of the mill average maxfax doctors. However, I had not seen any real 'negative' remarks on maxfax surgeons with A LOT of experience. I'm not sure if you are in Australia [saw that first pic in Sydney], but I figured you may have been, which is why I made the comment.

Nevertheless, seems like you are on the right path and know what your doing! Just be ready for about 4 months of

haha

Update

#40 Post by lebron85 »

Just an update - I've been booked in for April 26th for the surgery. The lady that booked them in also booked in a few pre-surgery appointments with the surgeon before the date. I guess this is to further discuss and clarify any issues beforehand?

I must say my teeth have aligned nicely with the bracers thus far, no complains there. The canting in the jaw however is still present... when I close it is noticeable and my orthodontist has described it as 'minor' canting.

I had an occlusal CANT which did not show in my face or my teeth from frontal view. After surgey I was told it was 2mm...hence why I could not see it, however they cut my jaw 6mm which is not what I wanted or informed of :( I think I had a run-of-the-mill surgeon.

I think as you have all done your research you will be very happy...you all seem to be well informed and have knowledge of your procedures...GOOD LUCK all :D

Hi all,
Just an update, after reflecting on how far my orthodontic journey has come, I have decided against surgery. The benefits do not outweigh the risks and my teeth are looking great. My case is very mild therefore the results would be very mild.

I appreciate all the advice given, thanks again.

Hi Lisab28,

I feel I can relate to you and am 4 days post op - genioplasty for a receding chin.I liked my frontal profile and was unsure how the advancement would change it. But now im soo worried and do not like what i have done to myself. Although my chin was to be moved forward as close to 10mm or near as possible.

I have tried to look at your picture to see if you have a similiar situation to mine (but your pictures are no longer available) and there i very little information on revisions. I understand it is early and my face is still swollen but i now look and feel very manly and have lost my feminie cute (what i felt were) features. The swelling is different person to person, but i can feel around the bone and i have a very long face with a BIG chin.

The chin is very long and big for my face. As I am new it would not allow me to send you a private message.

But i would really appreciate any advice and research on revision:

- How long before u had ur revision
- Was there additional pain
- What did you explain to the surgeon
- Did you face look the as it did before the genioplasty
- Was the operating time the same or less
- Did you feel worse post op the second time or was it the same

Apologies for the questions, but i thought I would look better after the op, how wrong i was! Like you I never thought or was discussed what if it didnt look like what i wanted............

Any advice much appreciated x : )

Ps I also used a qualified maxifacial surgeon and have confidence in his ability as a specialist.

Therefore this is a shock, as I look like a different person x : (
