Mouth exercise suggestions?

#1 Post by Brandini »

Hi all. I am 9 weeks post-op for an overbite. I had a “3 piece” upper and lower jaw surgery. I am done with my all liquid diet and have upgraded to soft foods. I would say that I still have 20-30% of my swelling to go. I am pleased with my results but am disappointed that I still have very limited mobility in my upper lip. I was wondering if anyone had “exercise” suggestions. I have trouble saying my ‘b’s and ‘p’s because I can’t quite close my lips fully yet. Also I cannot open my mouth very much yet either. My ortho and surgeon gave me some tips but I was wondering what other patients have actually found helpful.

Thanks!

I just tried to make silly faces, pursing my lips, etc. Here is a link to my blog post about this - http://asmileconnectsus.blogspot.com/20 ... ay-25.html

Good luck!

I did some tongue-twisters, trying to move my lips as much as possible and get the clearest sound possible:

A big black bug bit a big black bear and the big black bear bled blood. (make sure you're emphasizing both the beginning and ending consonants on each word)

Pretty Polly polishes pretty pewter platters. (again, emphasize beginning/ending consonants)

She sells sea shells by the sea shore, where the sun shines on the shop signs. (be especially aware of that "p" in "shop")

Thanks for the suggestions ladies!

@ asmileconnectsus, I love your blog. It feels good to be able to read about you going through all the same things I am. Thanks for the link! Also I love your pictures; the year end ones give me hope!

@Coloradogirl....the tongue twisters are a great idea. ‘b’s and ‘p’s are the worst right now. When I talk on the phone the people always ask me “b as in boy!??!?!” and I say “yes, ‘v’ and in voy”
