Independent Insurance Coverage?

#1 Post by samo »

For the last few years I've been seriously considering having something done to correct an underdeveloped jaw. I had braces when I was a teen, but we opted out of the surgery as it 'scared' my parents to put me through it (insurance would have covered it fully). Was very unhappy when the braces came off, as all they have really done is angled my upper teeth backward. Anyways, after a consult with an oral surgeon a couple months ago, he recommended a mandibular advancement as well as sliding genio.

Problem is, I quit my job a couple weeks ago and am no longer on their insurance plan. I've been shopping around, but my application for BCBS was rejected due to health problems. Found this strange as I have never been hospitalized and hardly ever get sick. I did mention something about a congenital defect on the application, though was told I couldn't be denied/rejected for that.

Anyone had any luck with an insurance provider (on independent coverage) covering a significant amount on the surgery? I'm currently in Iowa, btw.

Hey Blue Cross covers all but the 3,000$ fee that no insurances cover for the Workup and hospital stay. I had blue cross when I went for the surgery. I did not end up getting surgery after having a few consults, find with my ortho and I because we're doing perfect without it. But definatly Blue Cross. You can get just the health insruance part for the surgery and pray for braces out of pocket.

That is what I planned on, but Blue Cross denied me coverage. My insurance agent and I are trying to appeal right now but I'm also shopping around for other companies who might cover the surgery. It was already my plan to just pay for braces out of pocket since it's pretty rare insurance will bother with them.

Damn, it looks like neither Kaiser or Cigna offers independent coverage in the area. Thanks anyways.

Has anyone in the Dallas-Fort Worth area have success finding an Independent Insurance Company to pay for this surgery? I was just denied because my insurance excludes orthognathic surgery for over the age of 19. I feel defeated.
