Recovery time?

#1 Post by pa1n »

Hi everyone,

I finally have a surgery date which is on the 15th of Feb, unfortunately uni starts for 12 days later (about 2 weeks). I was just wondering how long it took for some of you to recover? By that i mean no swelling and in a condition suitable for studying again.

If i have to miss more than 3 weeks of uni i will have to change the appointment to December :(

Any help is appreciated, thanks!

Edit: It's a upper and lower jaw surgery.

I had upper and lower jaw surgery 3 weeks ago and I'd say swelling is still there, but not so bad that people who don't know me would know something was off. My energy level still isn't where I'd like it to be, but it's getting better. I guess what I'm saying is that you'll probably be fine with three weeks to recover. My speech is the one thing that still gives it away that I had something done. I think you should be fine though. It's better than waiting until December, yikes! Good luck!

3 weeks should be all you need. I start my first day of my last semester tomorrow and I had surgery just over 3 weeks ago. I could have started school with only 2 weeks rest but the extra week has me pretty much back to normal.

Wow, wisdom teeth removal took me 2 weeks to get back to normal. I guess jaw surgery isn't as bad as it seems

I had lower jaw surgery a month ago. I was feeling fine after a week and could of gone back to work after 2 weeks. It was no way as bad as I was expecting. Getting my wisdon teeth out was worse.

I'm 49 and just had my top jaw done on 12-27 it been almost 2 weeks and i'm feeling alot better, i'm out walking 2 miles a day and starting to get more energy, still swollen and have a huge bruise under my chin and neck but besides that the only thing that is really noticeable is my speach. If you have any questions, i'll do my best to answer them for you.

I had upper, lower and genio. It was about 5 weeks when about 95% of the swelling was gone and I felt like I had my normal level of energy back.

Do you actually feel weak and lethargic for a few weeks after surgery?
I only had wisdom teeth surgery in my whole life. I felt quite normal in terms of energy level, I didn't feel tired or lethargic at all. There was some pain - very bearable with pain killers for 1st few days. The only thing that even bothered me was the restricted diet. I basically had to eat soft food (that can be sucked from a straw) for 2 weeks, about 2 weeks and a half I can eat like normal (anything including steak). After 1 week I can somewhat eat normal but you needed to be very careful with where you chew and chunks of food gets into the socket which is VERY annoying.

Swelling - its been 5 weeks and my swelling is still very noticable, i had sarpe on my top jaw, I can get a spoon in my mouth but it has to be small amounts of food. One side is more swollen then the other and my front tooth hurts when i talk i guess its the vibration has anyone experience such a long time with swelling. I'm getting very frustated with the whole thing

I don't know about everyone, but I'm almost 4 mos post-op, and I do still have some swelling. It's not extremely noticeable, but I see it. Anyways, I think you should be fine in 3 weeks. Even with some pretty bad complications I was back to work in 4 weeks (& I spent 9 days in the hospital).

You'll do great!

Yes, I believe impacted 3rd-molar extraction and orthognathic surgery are considered equivalent in the pain department. Certainly the swelling lasts longer with jaw surgery, but the pain is about the same-ish.
