April 2012 buddies!

#1 Post by Clare85 »

Hi everyone! Anyone joining me for surgery in April? Mine's booked for April 16. My 27th birthday is 6 days prior. I'm having a mandibular advancement, 2 wisdoms out, and possibly a genioplasty. I'm having the surgery at Epworth Richmond in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.

I have surgery planned for April the 16th as well :) To correct my underbite, I spoke to my surgeon just before Xmas and he said my lower jaw will be moved back, and my top jaw forward and slightly up. Can't remember the exact measurements, but will ask him again the next time we meet. About 10 weeks away which isn't that far off, starting to get quite nervous about it all.

Hi Clare - I'm from Melbourne too. Do you mind if I ask who your surgeon/orthodontist is and how you went about figuring out how good they were? I've found an ortho and a surgeon who i think will do a good job but I really want a second opinion.

Hi!
If only I knew! I just took a gamble. My dentist referred me to my ortho (Dr Igor Lavrin) and my ortho referred me to my surgeon (Dr Tim Probert). Getting a second opinion is a great idea. Also make sure you have full hospital and extras insurance cover. You won't regret it! Best of luck!

Hi Clare85

Yes I think so, I have 2 more appointments on the 3rd and the 13th then Surgery on the 16th unless they tell me otherwise. Was a bit worried as I have not had my wisdom teeth out yet, I was told usually they take these out 6 months prior to Surgery but now they will be done at the same time as the surgery.

3 weeks is not that far away, I have to say it has been on my mind a lot recently and I haven't 'prepared' for it as such. How is your preparation going? I need to look at all the stickies on the forum and buy all the stuff that will help me get through recovery. Are you working? If so do you have much time off work? My work have been really good with me, they have allowed me time off for my regular appointments in the last 2+1/2 years with no fuss and was told I can take 2-4 weeks off without any complaints.

My other concern is the amount of time I will take to recover. I love playing Football and going to the Gym, I'm sure until I am able to eat proper food I won't have enough energy to do anything remotely active.

Great to hear from you! Don't worry, my wisdoms are coming out on the same day too. Personally I'd rather just go through one lot of anesthesia, pain and swelling so I'm happy with that! I have done zero prep besides stock piling DVDs and books to keep me occupied. My mum has taken a few days off work to look after me so that will be fabulous. I go back to work on May 3. I hope that's enough time off. I have one 11hr shift, one 10hr shift, then another 2 days off before getting properly back into it. I'm nervous of being bumped in the face (I work with animals) or drooling mainly. I can't really take more time as my work has had to hire someone to replace me while I'm gone, for that specific period.
My last appointment with both my surgeon and ortho is April 11, where I get my surgical hooks put on and the surgeon discusses his plan and shows me his models etc.
Is your surgery in Australia? How long do you have to stay in hospital for? And how much will it cost? I'm looking at 15k!!!

Hi there! I can't believe I just found this site! I am scheduled for Sarpe on April 11th! Can I be a buddy too :D
As the day approaches I am getting more and more excited, apprehensive, and nervous. After meeting with my OS in October I wasn't expecting a surgery date for at least 10 months to a year. Then a month ago I got the call!
I am an "oldie" compared to most of you....almost 56! I thought I might be my surgeons oldest patient but he assures me I am not :D
Fortunately I own my own business so I can take as much time I need for recovery. I think I am more anxious about the lovely gap i will have than I am about the actual surgery. Anyone have any advice on that?

Hi Tracey! Of course you can! Best of luck with your surgery. I don't know anything about SARPE surgery so unfortunately can't offer any advice about the gap. :)

Hey Clare

My surgery is being done in the UK with the National Health Service which fortunately for me means it is free. I can't believe it is only 17 days away  Really need to start ordering all the bits and pieces I need. You only have a little over 2 weeks before you go back to work? Fingers crossed for you that you recover well enough for it. From your first post it looks like you are only have work done on 1 jaw right? I remember reading that recovery is generally faster compared to people who surgery on both?

Good luck with your surgery Tracey, 11 days to go :)

Hi AA27, lucky you that it's free! How long between between being ready for surgery and actually getting a date was there though? I've heard the waiting period can be extreme sometimes. Yes you're right, just one jaw for me (as far as I know at this stage anyway!) so yes, hopefully the recovery will be a bit quicker. And from what I've seen from pictures, videos etc, lower jaw seems a bit less invasive than upper jaw, given that your hard palate is getting in the way of your upper jaw being moved - so it's great you can take the time you need to get better. Keep in touch everyone! Not long now! Two weeks! ARGH!!!

I think it was around 2-3 months when they said my teeth was more or less ready for Surgery before I got a date so not that bad. I do have some bad news in that I am no longer having surgery on the 16th :( I had my pre-op assessment yesterday and everything went fine, I had a blood sample/test taken and received a call this morning telling me the test indicates that I am prone to bleeding. Obviously this is not a good thing when undergoing the surgery, so now I have to take another blood test to confirm this and have a further discussion with a clinician.

Although this is being done in my best interests I can't help but feel extremely down about it. I have waited 2+1/2 years to get this done and 12 days before Surgery it is being put on hold. Not even sure why a test like this was not done way before we got to this stage. It looks like I won't be part of the April buddies thread :( This news also puts doubts into my mind about having the surgery, although I should really wait to hear back from the Hospital before coming to any conclusions.

I really hope your Surgery goes well Clare, will check this thread and hopefully see some of your updates.
