Possible infection?

#1 Post by hundreds »

I had a double jaw surgery and genioplasty over a week ago and the recovery process has been going pretty typical with other peoples experiences. But, when I wake up after sleeping I have a very bad taste in my mouth and sometimes there's a very faint red tint in the builtup saliva/drool overnight.

Could this be from an infection?

I don't feel any different from before and there isn't really any new swelling so I'm not sure if it's normal. I've also been cleaning very thoroughly.

I am guessing you have a splint in? Wired shut for the first week? Still wired shut or open now?

I know that with my double jaw surgery back at the end of January, being wired shut the first week with a splint and open after the first week but with the splint remaining for the next 5 weeks. With food and meds and all that getting into the little crevices of the splint no matter how good I cleaned, I could taste the bad taste occasionally. It's like with braces brackets, because they are on your teeth for so long, if they get loose, you get a distinct bad taste in your mouth. My orthodontist told me it is just the bacteria that is able to get into the tight places and not being able to clean it. When my splint finally got removed after 6 weeks, HOLY GROSSNESS! You think you clean so well, and my orthodontist even said that my hygiene with the splint was better than anyone she had seen in two or so weeks, but oh my I thought it was disgusting and you can taste and smell the bacteria. So I dont think you really have too much to worry about there. With the slight tint to your drool, as long as you aren't seeing a lot of bright red you should be fine. You probably still have stitches that could be oozing a little. I saw my surgeon every week until the 5 week post op mark so hopefully you will be able to get in to see someone who can put your mind at ease soon!

Good luck with recovery! You may experience hard times in the next few weeks but take it from someone who has been there, it WILL get better! Just breathe!
