Removing the expander, is it painful?

#1 Post by Soph26 »

I'm having my bone-anchored expander removed tomorrow under local anaesthetic and can't find any information about potential pain and recovery. I'm assuming it'll be fine as the implanted bar isn't very wide. But the surgeon already told me he won't be able to stitch the palate up where the holes are so I'm worried about walking around with open wounds in my mouth until they heal! Has anyone had this kind of expander removed? Did you swell up and did it hurt?

I had an expander as a teenager. Not sure if it's the same type as yours. Did you have your wisdom teeth out? That's what it feels like having "an open wound" in your mouth. I didn't think it was that bad.
