"...you could go from Mr Chin to Mr No Chin" says Max-Fac.

I've been strapped in fixed braces for 2 years and I am now finally ready for surgery. I have my final pre-surgery appointment next week (where I should be getting an op. date) with the Ortho and surgeon.

I'm feeling quite anxious about it because I have been given various options (at least initially) for what I want done. The main thing is to medically correct my bite, however this can be achieved in different ways; I have a slight under-bite (class 3), and a prominent chin which is tall and sticks out (too prominent in my opinion!).

Originally the plan was to simply move my lower jaw back by 5-7mm and this would have reduced the height which would've been great in all cases! However, because of gum/teeth issues, the ortho couldn't do so much movement and therefore the predicted movement is now only 3mm!!

The surgeon said this is very small and will be barely noticeable, although still making my bite a lot better. However I've become quite obsessed with the idea of my chin becoming less prominent and therefore the surgeon said he could do the lower jaw surgery and a genioplasty (height reduction). Although he did say it could go from one extreme to the other and is slightly risky - with the risk being that I don't like it! The other option is to move my upper jaw forward + genioplasty but I think that then I would look like a stereo-typical spartan warrior.

My question is, has anyone ever had surgery (BSSO, SARPE + genioplasty etc etc...) where by you have gone from having no cheekbones to overly prominent cheekbones (upper jaw), no lower jaw to a big lower jaw (lower jaw), no chin to a big chin and vice versa?

I'm going to need to make a decision before next week. I've been shown photos but the surgeon did say they are not always so accurate! :S

Thanks for any insights.

what was wrong with your gums and bone that they couldn't move your jaw back? Couldn't they do some bone and gum grafts??
