Revision Surgery

#1 Post by davinci7 »

I have had surgery twice so far (upper and lower) for an overbite and I'm still terribly disappointed with the results. It's been over 18 months since the last surgery so it looks like things won't improve. For some reason, the surgeon did not do an impaction (I have a very long face) and now my face is even longer. I have to strain hard to close my lips and when my lips are relaxed you see all my top and bottom teeth which looks awful. When I smile it just looks weird as my top teeth come forward too much. My upper jaw is unusually long.
I have some difficulty speaking and eating (food tends to fall out) and I occasionally dribble. I bite my upper lips when I eat and it just doesn't feel or look right at all.

I'm going back to see my surgeon and ask for an impaction and genio (my lower jaw is still recessive). Does anyone know if I can do this without having braces all over again. I just couldn't bear to go through all that another time.In fact I don't know if my face can either.

Have you thought about seeing a different surgeon? If your results are not what you discussed with your surgeon you might want to get a second opinion especially if you truly have major lip incompetence.
Treatment-
  • Braces: In-Ovation L (lingual) on top, and In-Ovation R (metal) on bottom
  • SARPE
  • BSSO advancement
  • estimated 18-22 months
SARPE
  • Expander installed Jan 14th 2013
  • Surgery Feb 18th 2013
  • Turn 26 days to 13mm. Gap between teeth maxed out at 12-13mm.
  • Gap down to 7mm Apr 18
  • Gap Closed Aug 6
  • Expander out Sep 19
BSSO
  • Insurance approved, surgery scheduled for Dec 18!

First I went and saw two cosmetic surgeons because my initial issue was with the aesthetic result. They both agreed that my chin was still very recessive and recommended a genioplasty (not a chin implant). One told me that my upper jaw was too far forward (which is where the orthognathic surgeon put it).
Recently I saw another orthognathic surgeon, but after paying $250 he told me nothing except how good he was. This put me off going any further with him.

I'm only just at a point now where I realize what is wrong (taken me over 12 months) so now I know what questions to ask. I've learned that it's really important what questions you ask because the surgeons (I've seen) seem to have a tendency to talk a long time about nothing relevant to the problem.

I'm seeing my surgeon next week. I'm going to ask him some very specific questions this time;
1. Exactly how far forward he moved each jaw.
2. Why did he move the top jaw so far forward.
3. Why did he elongate the upper jaw?
3. Why are my jaws at such an angle?

I suppose the most important question is...can you fix it with minimal invasive surgery?
