Getting food caught in splint

#1 Post by ijeko »

So I just attempted to eat my first non liquid meal in the form of scrambled eggs about an hour ago. Checked in the mirror with a hand mirror angled up onto the roof of my mouth to see if anything got stuck in there, and theres a bunch of scrambled egg particles stuck in the splint. I tried to get them out to no avail, and used a waterpik, but that just made it worse and jammed the particles even further into the crevasses. What do I do? Go to my orthodontist to see if they can somehow get it out? The food is stuck all the way down towards the back of the teeth in the splint at some parts. I'm never attempting to eat non-liquid food again until this thing is taken off.

I'd get a waterpik! That's what I used and it was great!

Haha thanks snapdresser, I said though that I tried using a waterpik, it kind of just shot the food debris further into the splint though.

Ah, I guess I didn't read it thoroughly enough. Sorry! Good luck!

You are just going to have little food bits stuck in the splint (and the resulting foul breath) until it comes out. Not much you can do about it. (And I had my splint in for nine weeks because my bone was slow to heal.) When they took that thing out, I immediately brushed my teeth three or four times in a row.

Yeah, it's gross for a little while. I just rinsed for 10 minutes after every meal. At the 2-week followup when they removed the first half of the splint, my surgeon commented I'd done a great job keeping it clean, so that was nice to hear. Looking forward to getting the second piece off next week!
