Having surgery to remove screws and plates after 20 years

Anyone had their upper jaw screws and plates removed after a long time? In my case, it's been over 20 years and now I'm having terrible infections, screws are starting to come out of the bone, and a plate is broken. I'm having it all removed this Wednesday and I'd love to hear from anyone who has gone through this. What should I expect recovery-wise?

Ah I was under the impression that the bone would kinda grow around it all and it would just become part of you :s
