LeFort 1 surgery questions!

#1 Post by Msb12 »

So long story short I need a 3 piece LeFort 1 with lower jaw advancement as well. The surgery was planned for the end of the year but unexpectedly (due to insurance reasons) is moved up to October 26th. I have been in braces for a year and my teeth are not quite ready for the 3 piece LeFort 1 so I will have to have a 2 piece with the possibility of having just a normal LeFort 1. So my questions are: how is the recovery in general? I heard there are a lot of nose blood clots and you have to sleep upright. Is this true? Is there anything I can prepare for ahead of time (especially food)? How long did you stay in the hospital after your surgery? What tips would you give someone who is having a LeFort 1 done with lower jaw advancement? Sorry I'm kind of freaking out because I was not planning to have this surgery so soon! Any advice you can give will greatly be accepted!
Thank you in advance!

I had a Lefort I with BSSO (lower jaw advancement).

how is the recovery in general? Probably not as bad as you think it will be. The first few days to a week are hard and go by slowly, but after that it's okay. It's a slow recovery process (a few months) but it is easy to manage if you are prepared and don't push yourself too hard.

I heard there are a lot of nose blood clots and you have to sleep upright. Is this true? I didn't have any nose blood clots but bleeding from your nose for the first few days is common. As far as sleeping, I bought a foam triangular wedge from Amazon and used that to sleep on an upward angle for the first 30 days. Other people here swear by sleeping on recliners or 2-3 pillows. It's also not necessary to sleep like that for 30 days, I just found my setup comfortable and figured the longer I did it, the better.

Is there anything I can prepare for ahead of time (especially food)? For sure...buy a case or two of Ensure or another meal replacement. You could also make or buy some thin soups (no chunks) or get ingredients ready to make smoothies. A nice broth is really comforting after surgery.

How long did you stay in the hospital after your surgery? One night is standard as far as I've read. Sometimes two if you're bleeding a lot afterwards.

What tips would you give someone who is having a LeFort 1 done with lower jaw advancement? Read as much as you can here, read as many jaw surgery blogs as you can, buy things in advance. Everyone has their own I AM A SHITHEAD SPAMMER. PLEASE REPORT ME TO THE ADMIN! (Most Valuable Product) of jaw surgery and mine were the aforementioned foam wedge, and a sports squeeze bottle I got from this website.
