How long did it take to get off pain meds? I had my surgery April 21. I'm still in a lot of pain. I am trying to use hydrocodone only at night so I won't run out. I see my surgeon Monday so will talk to him about it. Just wondered what others experience is. Now lots of stinging and tingling but I perceive it as pain.
Had upper and lower and UPPP and nasal, so a lot done. I was in the hospital 2 nights.

Re: How long do you need pain meds
Hi there,
I had my surgery the day before you and stayed at the hospital for 1 day and went home early afternoon the day after. I had double jaw surgery. I'm sure it varies (perhaps quite a lot) from person to person; I took pain meds(panadol and ibuprofen) 4 times a day for the first 4 days then had my 1 week appointment with my surgeon who told me that now, I only needed pain meds if I felt like it, so for about 3 days I cut down to 3 times a day. Then I went on for 2 days where I took it twice a day and after that I stopped. I'm not in pain any longer but do feel discomfort every now and then in different parts of the jaw, sometimes just below my ears or other places but it's not that bad so no meds.
They wanted me to stay home for 4 weeks but I'm back at work after 2, so I don't think it's weird if you still have (some) pain. I wish you a speedy recovery!

Re: How long do you need pain meds
Wow, seems like you're doing a lot better than I. I'm having constant throbbing in my chin and my teeth hurt, they ache like the ortho just tightened everything, and when I try to eat anything but liquid that hurts too. But I am 57, maybe that has something to do with it. Also not sleeping well.
Re: How long do you need pain meds
It will pass with time
Perhaps age has something to do with it - I'm 28 and recovered a lot faster than I expected based on what I was told by my ortho and surgeon. Are you allowed to chew, you said your teeth hurt? I'm not allowed to chew anything for at least 4 weeks post op.

Re: How long do you need pain meds
He says soft chew for 4 months, but since it hurts to chew I'm doing only liquids. But he said refried beans, soft whatever. They served me mashed potatoes and other soft food in hospital. Basically soft puree. So it does increase my pain when I do chew. So better learn to like smoothies more.
I think he's okay with chewing motion. There's no way I could chomp down because of pain. Well, I see him today, I'll ask.
I'm glad you got yours done at 28, what a blessing.
