Hello all,
Glad I found this forum. Long story short, 32 year old male with overjet. Saw an ortho, they referred me to a surgeon, we planned on lower jaw surgery. After 18 months of braces, I finally had surgery on aug 16.
I woke up on aug 16 from surgery feeling like I now have an underbite. I was in the hospital for 3 nights. While In the Hospital, I felt pretty good. I was able to sleep and the swelling was in good control. Since I've been home, it's been hell.
I'm really freaking out about the way my lower jaw now sits. It's most comfortable when my lower front teeth go beyond my upper front teeth. I feel like the surgery was botched and it's making me go crazy!
I saw my surgeon all three mornings that I was in the hospital. He seemed happy about the placement of my jaw... I just can't believe that this is a good placement for my lower jaw considering the only teeth that are touching are my front teeth! And it's only comfortable in an underbite position.
The way I understood it was, after all this time in braces , once my jaw slid forward, I'd have the perfect bite. Instead my bite has never been worse!!!
This entire experience has been way more intense than I ever expected. Did any of you guys wake up from surgery feeling like the surgery was botched but later got favorable results??
Surgeon told me my jaw was advanced by nearly 10mm. Pre surgery he told me it would be advanced by 7mm. I'm just feeling pretty lousy and wish I at least had confidence in my results so far. Thank you for reading this.

Re: Starting to freak out
I am in the same predicament right now my friend, but on the opposite end. I had an underbite. A lot of it is the muscles adjusting. You can change the bones. but the muscles must be retrained. Most people have discomfort for a while. I am having to undergo a lot of elastics and orthodontics to fix the rest of the stuff surgery didn't. Try to be positive and always ask the doctors questions. Bring up your concerns. Make sure they can address them. I was scared about everything, but my doctors always address my stress and reassure me of anything.

Remember that you likely lived with that bite you had for years. This will help you breathe better, sleep better, smile better, and chew better. You may not FEEL better but its a journey.

Don't worry, most don't have a proper bite for a while after surgery, but orthodontics will most likely remedy that issue. Orthodontics can bring your lower teeth in and push your upper teeth out to create a bite post-surgery.
