Ok...here's the deal. I know I should talk to my surgeon but I'm impatient and I won't have an appointment for months!
I have an underbite but I had fixed braces for 18 months so my teeth are straight. I don't think either jaw needs expanding, all that needs to happen is my teeth need to be re-aligned to fit the new jaw position if I decide on surgery. So will I need to have braces for a really really long time? Or maybe could it just be a few months (fingers crossed). Did anyone, or does anyone know of somebody who didn't need to have braces for that long prior to surgery?

I wore braces when I was 13 (33 now) and I have straight teeth. I have a overbite and had braces put on 3 weeks ago. According to the ortho and Maxo surgeon I will be in braces for 9 months, then have surgery, then in braces for another 6 months. I just found out today that they will be yanking out by lower bicuspids

Extractions and stuff
I too have an underbite and my teeth were fairly straight before hand. Although, I had extractons last July before getting braces put on in August because room was needed on my top jaw. Both of those were first bicuspids (pre-molars). Having those extractions does lengthen the time before surgery because the gaps will need to be closed before surgery. Right now, I'm almost six months into braces and the extraction gaps aren't even half way closed. I'm guessing my surgery will be somewhere between 12 and 18 months in. But, it's different for everybody and it's hard to make a blanket estimate for everyone.
