Hi,
I've been reading through here - it's helped me prep for my SRPE surgery on Thursday. I've had braces on since Nov and the hyrax has been in for about a week. I've got lingual braces (on the tongue side) on my top teeth and ceramics on the bottom. With the expander in too, I don't have much room for my tongue! Not sure how much I'll be expanded but I've been told I'll be turning 2x a day. Thanks to all for sharing your stories and pics - it has been very reassuring!

Hey DM~I went to the orthodontist yesterday and I found out that my expander will be taken out in 6 weeks! I was really surprised but it made my day! So now I'm the next one in the club to get it out! How many days did your teeth hurt after it was removed?
I also got powerchains put on the bottom for the first time to close some gaps and my teeth have been throbbing for 24 hours. I keep taking advil but it's not helping. Now I understand how others feel when they get those things put on!
Good luck with the surgery OpenBite! It's definently worth it.

I'm not sure if my memory serves me right, but I can't remember my teeth hurting at all after the RPE was removed. It also came of easily, no pain, no bleeding gums, none of those things I worried about. How many days did your teeth hurt after it was removed?
Great to hear your RPE sentence is almost over!!

kate..great to hear you just have six weeks to go with the expander!..My teeth were incredibly sore and there was some bleeding when they took it out..after having it in 6 months i guess i should have expected that..I was on soft foods for more than a week..the teeth which the bands were remeved from and then new bands placed to anchor my archwire were the worst!!..but really with that said in the scheme of things its nothing..just have some soft yummy things on hand..maybe your expereince will be more like joplins..hopefully!!
oh and the power chain pain for me only lasts a day or 2 after they go on..but maybe its diffferent for me since my docs use whats called a power thres" whih i think is a bit different.

Thanks Joplin and DM. I hope my experience is definently like Joplin's but at least I know what to expect if it is not like that. I scheduled my dentist appointment 3 days after the expander gets removed so I'm hoping it won't be too painful by then or I'll just have to load up on the Advil!!! When I was a kid I briefly had braces and I remember how much it hurt when they were removed. The pain was worse then getting them on!
But I still cannot wait to get that thing out of my mouth
It will be so nice to have a lot less metal in my mouth
Take care.

It is the best feeling having it gone...no matter how used to it you have become..It feels so great now!..BTW I met w/ my ortho today to get some wires clipped and a wire tie replaced and she said much of the pain I experienced was doue to the molars moving so quickly because they are so rotated in my case and that the expander wasn't letting them move the way the braces wanted them to..anyway the point is that my discomfort was probably not the norm...
My speech is so much better now!

Just had my surgery yesterday. It was pretty quick - maybe only an hour in the operating room and then two hours in recovery. Not much swelling or pain, I just feel uncomfortable and can't close my mouth all the way. My oral surgeon turned the hyrax for me today in his office which didn't hurt either but I could feel pressure in the roof of my mouth. I definitely felt better after drinking a smoothie - I don't think you realize how hungry you are when you're on the pain meds.

Man, so many things have happened since I've been away. Congrats to those who under gone SARPE, and to those who've made such progress. Kate, your smile looks amazing! As does DM's.
I've had quite the adventure too. The gap is finally closed, we started working on it in December, and it closed pretty quickly without too much pain. I'd have to say that power chains and steel ties hurt the worst. But only temporarily. I also found out that I'm pregnant. I've been so super sick that I haven't done much of anything. Being sick and throwing up with braces is TERRIBLE....but I'm starting to feel better.
Kate, like DM, getting my expander out was hard, and it hurt. But after having it out, I quickly forgot how bad it was to get out. I finally could talk! And eat!! I hope that your experience is better.
Anyways, I'm glad everyone is doing well. Have a great day!
