SARPE Surgery

Ya that's what I gathered. I'll say that my week of expanding seemed like it would never end. I can't imagine having to go longer than a week but I bet it was a little more comfortable. Doing 4 turns a day made my mouth sore for a little bit after the turns.

nazzila, Happy Birthday. Today is my birthday too! Don't worry you'll be chewing soon. I remember the first few days not being able to even chew mashed potatoes. I thought I'd never be able to chew again. But within 2 weeks I was was chewing okay, and my a month I could chew pretty well (from what I remember). The worst part about chewing for me was the expander, not the surgery part.
Good luck.
Good luck.

My OS clipped almost all the stiches out at my three week appointment. They awere not even close to being dissovled at that time. I felt soooooo much better after he did that. Aftr thee were just small peices , so I they must have just dissolved over time.

Esoteric,
It shouldn't be long...I never paid much attention to dissolving stitches, but I would think that in three weeks' time they should be coming out on their own.
Best thing to do is make a quick call to your surgeon's office!
Be well, and at peace,
Phil

Dang, I'm worried now. I will get the upper braces on prior to surgery (for stability, I think the ortho said). Am I an orthodontic freak? I don't want the OS to start closing the gap prematurely. Will ask at my next consultation.chicago29 wrote:I'm wondering what the "consensus" is with putting on braces post-SARPE surgery. It seems that some people have had them put on immediately after expansion stops, while others have to wait 2 or 3 months to let the jaws heal.
Is this the preference of the orthodontist or surgeon that dictates how long you need to live with the gap, sans braces?
It looks like I may be doing SARPE in very early 2009, and the gap is probably the thing that worries me most. I'm going to want that closed as quickly as possible!!!

Happy Birthday, Nazzila and Badbite (slightly belated - sorry). It's my "birthday" tomorrow, too - one year since SARPE! My, how the time has flown!
Nazzila, it's another case of "it's different for everyone" when it comes to expanding. It depends how much room you need and how your ortho likes to go about things. I did 4 turns a day for 10 days. I had to spread the turns over the day (usually 2 in the morning, 2 in the evening) because it was a bit much all in one go. I don't think one turn a day would have hurt at all.
My gap came very quickly, which isn't surprising, and it went away by itself after a few weeks. When I'd done expanding my ortho left the expander in for another 6 months (nearer 7 actually, I think). I got so used to it that it really wasn't bothering me any more.

Hey guys, haven't posted in a while- how is everyone doing?
I've got to have bloody spacers in again next week for reasons I'm not quite sure of (I forgot what my ortho said last app.)- so that's going to be annoying! Seriously, spacers hurt more than SARPE did!
How's the bottom braces going, badbite?

nazzila, sorry for any confusion. I was talking about my SARPE birthday - i.e. one whole year since my operation. [We'll keep quiet about the fact that I'll be 45 next March...]
CB, spacers again, eh? You poor thing. Perhaps it won't be so bad this time round, though, since your teeth are used to moving already

Crazyb, Aren't you braced Yet? I don't know why else you would need spacers. I don't remember, but I know you should be ahead of me. The bottom braces are going well despite my temp crown and bracketed root canaled pre-molar. No problems yet. I have to say, my bottom braces have been going much smoother than top (knock on wood).
The spacers didn't hurt as bad, and it seemed a real easy transition (only a few minor irritations on my bottoms lips). Very little pain in the teeth. I don't know if you remember me complaining about how bad my teeth and jaw hurt throught the expander/SARPE process. I think the worst part for me has been those two teeth with the infections that my stupid, incompetent detist caused. He is the one who had me pull the healthy molar! Of course that is what started al lthis for me. The sad thing was I had just paid $1100 for a crown on that beautiful tooth. I guess I am still bitter just a tiny bit.
nazzila, Unfortunately, I still kind of have a space. The ortho said the space will not go away without shaving the teeth. I said do what you need to do.
I still have a crossbite on my right side. I feel like it gets worse eveyday. The ortho keeps saying don't worry about it, but I am scared one day I'll walk in and he'll say, "boy we don't have enough expansion." That would ruin everything!!
Well I hope all you SARPE/LEFORTE people are doing well. Keep updating, it is one of the few things I have to look forward to in the morinings.
