don't you take your bands off to eat? I am 5 weeks post op now and just got my splint removed...yeah... was given the green light for "soft chew" foods, eveything tastes like heaven now, mouth and teeth all feel really weird.

I was going to say the same. I know that when I am 10 wks post-op I go down to having my bands only at night and get to have soft food, so I don't won't have my bands on for eating. @candycin maybe it would be easier for you to wait to be able to change your bands till you eat? It might just make the whole process less frustrating...obviously if I were you I would try to eat whatever I could! haha

nope the same bands are still on since surgery
Dr left them on as he didnt want to stretch my lips to take them off to change them since my lips are still very tight and swollen, he figured if he had a hard time getting at them i would not be able to do it myself so instead of messing with them i am in them till the 21st of decmeber by then he hops my lips will be healed enough to put the removable ones on...
so i have to try to stretch my lips by massage to get the swelling and healing going....

this morning i scrambled some egss very small and i am able to put it in and swallow...chewing is hard and i do it a little but very difficult with the bands on

Well, good luck with the soft food! :) I hope the massage helps your lips!

I think I am going in tomorrow (yes Sunday!) to see my ortho. My periodontist, Dr. Mac is flying up from NYC and wants to see me. I have an apt on Monday, but they said they want more time so they want me to come in tomorrow evening. This is still slightly up in the air though, as I haven't heard a time sent. Still waiting on the phone call.

I really would love to be out of these bands. My joints feel like they need some oil...they feel a bit rickety. They told me to up my exercises without bands to three times a day. This is exhausting, but I do think it is making a difference in the "rickety" feeling....

So tonight (yes, on a Sunday) I met with my orthodontist and my periodontist (who flew up from NYC) for nearly 2 hrs. This was very stressful on my jaw joints, but I am very excited to report that my ortho thinks I should have my braces off in 4mo! I was hoping for 8-12...so 4!! WHOOHOOO!! They also tweaked some of my teeth and bands so they fit better, and relieve some of the stress on my joints. Overall it was a great appointment, but it was VERY exhausting, and my joints right now are very tired and I cannot wait to sleep it all off tonight :)

asmile- Congrats on the unofficial debracing date! I'm soooo jealous! :) Hopefully the adjustment last night will help ease your jaw joint pain.
In response to your comment you posted to me a while back (sorry for that--finals weeks last week and this week)- your blog and posts here have been nothing but encouraging and helpful. I am like you were before surgery- ready to get it and hopefully not have pain in my jaw joint/headaches, etc. Unfortunately, I will be surgery-ready in the middle of next semester, so I'll have to be the one to postpone it until after finals next semester...very difficult for me to do! But it will allow me to have the whole summer to heal, so that will be better in the long run.

Keep the posts and updates coming--and keep up the great healing! :)

Thanks charlsie! I am quite excited, although I am prepared to have them on longer than she "hopes" as this process has proved, nothing ever goes on the time line they have said...

Thinking on to Jan 12 when I can have soft food (finally!!) @ 10 weeks post-op, is cut up spaghetti a logical thing to hope for as my first meal?

Now that I am on soft foods, cut spaguetti has become one of my favorites!

YAYYYY!!! Thanks srs!

Does anyone have any idea when it would be okay to get back into even light yoga & pilates? I am supposed to start getting into "light exercise" and need to find some indoor things to do @ home. With it being winter time I can't really get outside for light or jaw approved exercise...

I just wanted to say that I've been reading your blog and thank you so much for sharing! I cringe every time you post pics of your screws/hooks or whatever they are! YIKES My OS gave me a choice between arch bars and the dreaded bone screws and b/c of your pics and pain stories, I chose the arch bars. For all I know the arch bars are worse, but the I'm choosing the unknown over what you're going through.

@OhioM- I'm not sure what the arch bars are, but if I had a choice I would have chose them too! ha, oh well...

@candycin- yes this did and still does happen to me from time to time...I think it is okay, just muscles trying to figure out how to work again :)

Regarding exercise, I guess you probably need to ask your doctor since you were a high risk case. I was told at my 2 week postop check that I could do light exercise, no running (I told the OS there's absolutely no chance of that happening! :( I am not a runner!), but nothing that involved bouncing. That was at 2 weeks. I am yet to get started...

I had one oral surgeon, one who didn't know what he was doing, say he could use arch bars on me. Arch bars are used as a means of holding the jaws together without braces.
