Re: Sorry, Should have said February 2014 surgery buddies
Hi!
Good to hear on your progress and that the light at the end of the tunnel is brighter!!
I tried to post a pic of my band configuration but I don't know how to do that. Well, before I get on with that, I want to announce that my braces were finally removed last Wednesday! It was such an emotional roller coaster that I went home and cried at the end of the day lol.
Let me start with my ortho texting me early that day to POSTPONE my appointment because she hadn't gotten the final OK from my surgeon...(In my opinion, she didn't want to come in after Brazil's loss - she's Brazilian)...I convinced her that the surgeon was on board and had even asked me 1.5 months ago when my braces were coming off.
Then in the office chair, I get my final check by the overseeing faculty (I did my ortho treatment at a university clinic in case you forgot) who said that one rear molar isn't touching quite they way they would like - the occlusion was a tad bit eensie weensie off...and asked if I could go 5 more weeks. My vacation saved me. He said it was no biggie and things would probably close up OK afterwords anyway. The ceramics on top came off pretty easily, as did most of the regular braces on the bottom. The bands on the molars were a bit more stubborn, but no excruciating pain. Oh, I popped a couple advil just before my appointment to be safe. That was all of 10 minutes. Then for 1.5 hours I was getting off all the cement/glue stuff. It wasn't too bad but loooong. My jaw got cranky at this point. Then came several sets (yes, SETS) of pictures, impressions, pictures, etc. etc. 3 hours later, I was on my way to lunch with our local legislator.
I also left with the invisalign-like retainers that I was instructed to wear 24-7 (save for special occasions). Glad I have it, though mine was kind of thick and I still talk a little funny. I also pick up regular retainers at my one month check. I think when I get both, I'll wear clear on top and regular on the bottom so my teeth aren't 10 mm apart because of plastic.
The retainers aren't bothersome, just slobbery when removing them. Make sure you take your case with you EVERYWHERE. That way there isn't even temptation to leave them in a napkin! The annoying thing (fortunately we were used to it bc of braces) is that you have to rinse and brush after every meal, unless you want to put the clear retainers on with food stuff on your teeth. Yuck!
I may have overdone it on my first day of freedom - I slept on my side, at a salad....talked a lot. And now I'm paying for it. My jaw joint on the left is suuper cranky. And my soreness is still there in the mornings. Baby steps.
I went to my regular dentist immediately afterwords for a cleaning and to ensure none of my babies were about to fall out after all this hard work they endured. And I came out almost unscathed. I did end up with a slightly grayed tooth which the dentist will monitor. He said we won't be able to tell if it's a dead tooth until a year later or it darkens rapidly. I am super sad about it, but it's not terribly noticeable and will pray it heals. The other thing is that I still have hypersensitivity on my left lower gums and lips and chin. It really sucks. If it gets better that's great otherwise, I might have to ask for something to be done, bc it feels like a pack of needles when chewing, brushing or rinsing water on that side. It was agony in the dentist chair because of that.
Was it worth it....I actually don't want to answer that right now. The possibly deadened tooth, the hypersensitivity...and not to mention I had a long thin face to begin with and this did not alleviate that one bit. My midline is half a tooth off to the left and my chin points 10 degrees more to the right...sigh...
Last thing - I had like six rubber bands before my braces came off. they were in a box in the back molars, a triangle with the top incisors, and diagonals from the lower bottom to the top incisors. Boy did that suck. Glad that's over.
But, no more braces!!

No more braces SoCal? Hooray!!! And we're right behind you!
Gotta say, I've finally gotten to the point where I don't think I will miss the bands. They've been something of a security blanket since the surgery, but just in the last few days I've gotten completely over them.
I asked my ortho about teeth whitening and everyone in the office agrees that Crest Whitestrips are waaaay cheaper and work just as well.
I guess I'll have to pay for extra/new retainers when I get a new crown (or two), but right now I'm not even thinking about that. All I can think of is "whew, almost done". It's kind of like being near the end of a two year, non-stop, grueling gym class. It better be worth it!
Surgeon not coming in because of Soccer? That's hilarious, but probably not out of the question.
I have a feeling I'll be wearing the Hawley's more often than not because 1) they sound more comfortable, and 2) with the former open bite, I've been told that the Essix retainers could possibly make that come back. Frankly, at this point I'm all about the comfort. I figure I'll be slobbering more for the first few weeks anyway - just as I did with each bit of new equipment installed in my mouth. But I'm having a salad as soon as possible. I'm so tired of eating overcooked vegetables! I know I will be obsessively brushing and flossing for a good long while.

Re: Sorry, Should have said February 2014 surgery buddies
Congrats on getting the braces off, SoCal! How exciting. How is life with retainers treating you?
Redwine: I too am going for comfort, and I think I'll just stick with the Crest White Strips as well. Although, I'm so paranoid about not having retainers for a couple days waiting for my Hawleys, so maybe I'll get the Essix trays just so I can get retainers on my teeth the same day plus whiten them as a bonus. Not sure what I'll do yet...
I got an email the other day reminding me of my appointment, and the appointment slip stated: "Final Adjustment (hopefully!)." Therefore, I'm pretty confident that on Monday, I will find out when my braces are being removed, on my 6-month post-op anniversary. Here's hoping that my perfectionist ortho gives me that date for sure! We're almost there!!!!

Re: Sorry, Should have said February 2014 surgery buddies
At my Wednesday appt. they took molds for the Hawleys, so approximately 10 minutes after having the braces removed, the retainers will go in. I say ten minutes because I plan to brush and floss like crazy before I put them in! As of that last appt., the bands are a thing of the past, and I don't miss them as much as I thought I would. A couple of gaps opened up, so I'm back to powerchains, but they're closing quickly. And the ortho says the Hawley's will actually work in our favor. I may have to put off the Essix for a few weeks, but I can live with that.
SoCal - How are the retainers going? Is there a special cleaning procedure you have to go by? Special products?
Sherry, I will be watching for your deband date!

I wonder why my ortho won't take the molds while the braces are still on then...I will be sure to ask him on Monday because I don't want my teeth shifting while I wait for my retainers! Make sure to take lots of pics after they're removed!redwine wrote:At my Wednesday appt. they took molds for the Hawleys, so approximately 10 minutes after having the braces removed, the retainers will go in. Re: Sorry, Should have said February 2014 surgery buddies
So excited for you both!! Post pics if you can (I on the other hand am lame on that front, but eh). I want to cheer and be happy for you both!
So, at my de-banding appointment, they made the essix retainers on the spot and I left with them on. My ortho instructed my to wear them AT ALL times at least for the first four months, and now a month out, my teeth are still not 'cemented' into position. So what I mean is that they have quite a bit of give when I put pressure on them. Weird. I have worn my retainer pretty religiously, except this one time, where I didn't wear them for almost four hours, then my teeth started to get sore and I began to panic...the retainer didn't go on quite as easily, but that may have been all in my head.
So, when your ortho puts them on the first time at the office, make sure they feel comfortable. Mine went a little too much into the gum on my molars and incisors and it was pretty uncomfortable then. I can only imagine what it would have been a couple days down the road. They can file them down a bit more for you.
I was totally slobbering the first couple days and had a speech impediment, but that goes away in less than a week. I have a feeling it'll be the same thing when I get my Hawleys. Last thing on the Essix, they get pretty dingy pretty fast. I was told I can brush them with regular toothpaste and toothbrush. What I did was buy those little containers to clean your dentures and denture solution in case the retainers really get out of hand gross. To experiment I went a day without brushing the retainer and just rinsing. No. Don't. Brush/clean them daily.
It's annoying that you have to brush and floss after everything because you're basically putting caps on all your teeth and you don't want any gunk in them.
My teeth also feel really weird when I don't have the retainers on - Like they aren't touching in the back, but I look in the mirror and see that they fit perfectly. So I guess wearing Essix retainers is a little weird because your teeth don't really touch.
Which brings me to wanting to get my Hawleys asap lol. I thought I would have gotten them at my one month check up, but my new ortho (mine graduated) said my original ortho wanted to take final x-rays to make the Hawley retainers. Such a perfectionist. The resident faculty wants to get me into Hawleys because he says that helps your teeth 'settle'. I have teensy weensy openings in my molars and I guess those will close up really quick in Hawleys.
I don't know if this is the case outside of a university setting, but where I did my treatment they usually get your molds right after removing your braces then send out an order for your Hawleys. Unless you're super special like me then the ortho does them himself so they're juuust right : ) But I did leave with Essix retainers in hand (or in mouth!)
Oh, and if you weren't already OCD from your braces, you should begin now! Be super diligent of always putting your retainers in their case whenever you aren't wearing them. Always. And clean them daily. And brush and floss after every meal. But I think we're probably already trained for that : )
In a way, Essix are a bit more annoying than braces but I hoped I answered all your questions, and if I left out anything, let me know!!

I just saw how long my post was - Ugh!
And that it's been six months since my surgery. Guys, I still have hypersensitivity/altered sensation on my chin and lip. Lame. How are you guys on that front and your jaw in general? If I over-exert myself or tense up, my jaw joints get sore still *_*

Re: Sorry, Should have said February 2014 surgery buddies
I still have a couple of small gaps the my ortho says the Hawley's will fix. I'll be in retainers everyday, all day for the first year, and then can go to just at night. But I'll be wearing the Essix for special occasions.
I had a feeling that slobber would be involved. Also anticipate a certain amount of speech impediment. Oh, the things we go through! You're right though, we're perfectly trained to be OCD when it comes to caring for out teeth. I'll be carrying a baby toothbrush around to clean the retainer before it goes back in. And I'll probably get a few cases to have - in my purse, in the car as well as at home.
I've heard of something called "Retainer-Brite", did your ortho mention it? I think it's a lot like denture cleaner, but a little less strong. And it's supposed to work quite well, according to the reviews on Amazon.
I still have a certain amount of hypersensitivity on the right side of my jaw, but it's not unmanageable. Certainly not like at the beginning when even the air set off a jangly/burning feeling. The left side (the side that was so badly damaged) has gone from the burning to an almost constant "buzzy" feeling. I like to think it's the nerves regenerating.
I still can't believe how far we've come!

Re: Sorry, Should have said February 2014 surgery buddies
Just got my braces removal date: September 4th!! And I only have to wear my elastics at night now! I'm SO thrilled, I'm doing a happy dance!
Re: Sorry, Should have said February 2014 surgery buddies
Whoo Hoo! So happy for you! Stay away from pliers & wirecutters - they will tempt you.
So the hated bands are almost a thing of the past. I've just stopped wearing them at night. It was a bit scary at first, but I'm waking up with my mouth shut and not needing a drink of water first thing. And my bite is still fine!
Tomorrow is my big day and I can't stop smiling. Bet you know that feeling!

Indeed, you must be THRILLED! Also, I'm the same about the bands thing: while my ortho said I only have to wear them at night, here I am still wearing at least the ones for my crossbite and midline. I find that my midline still shifts a bit after I take the elastic off, which is why I think if I wear them for just a bit longer than 8 hours (say, 12), perhaps the midline will be more stabilized in 23 days when they come off.redwine wrote:Whoo Hoo! Oh, and to answer SoCal's question from earlier about recovery: I mostly feel back to normal but every now and again, chewing still feels a bit foreign to me. It doesn't happen often, but I figure that this is due to only having a normal bite for 6 months as opposed to 33 years of eating incorrectly. It's going to take time to become accustomed to the new normal. I also don't have full feeling yet back in my gums and palate but I have sensation in most of my gums and palate, so I assume that perhaps it will take up to the full year for the full sensation to come back. But honestly, even if I'm stuck with these results for the rest of my life, I'm happy because it is a LOT better than it was before!
How are you going to celebrate the big day tomorrow? Go crazy by eating everything in sight while in public? That's what I'M doing.

Haha, you guys are funny! Don't get too wild there - or else your teeth or jaw might get really sore : ) Don't say I didn't warn you! The cool part for me was being able to eat something greasy and red...you know, the stuff that stained your ceramics and clear rubber bands : )
Thanks for sharing how your soft tissue is progressing - it was comforting to hear because I really had no idea how I should feel at this point. It seemed that six months you should feel like nothing happened lol.
So excited for you both!!

Re: Sorry, Should have said February 2014 surgery buddies
I got them off and it's awesome! Also had them whitened. Should get my retainers tomorrow, and it couldn't come any sooner: I already have two small gaps opening up in my lower teeth! Why some orthos choose not to do impressions before the braces off, I haven't a clue. I'm also concerned because my dentist said that he doesn't know why my back molars are not touching. I'm hoping that is just a settling issue and that the ortho knows what he's doing. Still: I'm wondering if he took the braces off a tad early only because he knew how badly I wanted them off.

Re: Sorry, Should have said February 2014 surgery buddies
Thanks! Just found out today that my ortho will be adding hooks to my retainer so I can wear elastics again for my molars to try to get them to close. Ugh, surgery done, braces off, still not done with a slight posterior open bite. So frustrated because the ortho had no business taking the braces off if my bite wasn't ready, and clearly it isn't. :/SoCalUniveristyLed wrote:Woohoo! Lookin good! Your teeth fit very nicely
