Hi Freerideuk and Whitelurcher! I just wanted to introduce myself, as I'm also from Glasgow, and will be having surgery at the Southern General in about a year's time. You're right, it really is a small world :) I hope everything goes well for you both x

I'm having BSSO lower jaw advancement to fix my 9mm overjet. At the moment I've got a deep bite, so my ortho is working on opening it up.

It's kind of comforting to know that there are other people living close by who are in the same boat 8)

Hi freerideuk and Clover

Which surgeon are you with at the SGH? I'm with Mr Koppel and I think I've met a Mr Devlin are there any others?

I've actually had about 4 planning apointments sofar and all I'm sure of is that my top jaw is being moved up 4-5mm and possibly out 1-2mm
I have an open/overbite, I got from previous jaw surgery. They may also do my bottom jaw as well, it depends on how well things line up with the braces. My next appt. is the 12th of Feb so hopefully I will at last find out whats happening!

Good luck all

My surgeon, so far, is Mr Downie. I say so far because he hasn't long qualified and I'm a bit concerned about his experience. I may end up having it done privately, if I can.

My surgeon said exercise light exercise (walking, etc) is fine almost immediately, and heavier exercise is okay after two or three weeks as long as there is no risk of impact to your face or any excess jaw pressure (i.e. avoid any heavy weight lifting where you may clench your jaw).

I did specifically ask about snowboarding, and he said that if my surgery was in fall or winter I probalby wouldn't have much of a season, if any at all. There is a very high risk of facial impact in snowboarding, and one minor tumble with you landing the wrong way could basically destroy your face (remember, your jaw is basically being held together by a few pins). Even landing hard on your butt when catching your heelside edge could cause you to bump your jaws together hard enough to do some serious damage. I believe he recommended at least 4 months of letting you bones heal before taking the chance with impact sports.

Not the news you wanted to hear, but that's what my surgeon told me. You may want to double check with yours, as different surgeons have different recommendations for recovery.

yes, this is def. one of the frustrations. check with your surgeon though for sure, there is such variability.
i actually will begin doing some more moderate exercise starting on Saturday as i just can't stay put any longer. won't do plyometrics or anything so that i don't jar my jaw too much. but will def. be picking it up.
good luck and fingers crossed that you will be able to do more than you expected.

thanks kballing

am sure i would be able to get gradually bk into it before too much just nothing too extreme

i should be able to take lessons fine before then i think
cause there is little chance of me falling
as you teach the basics

but i shall doo what the doctor says lolz he knows best not me =]

and kballing don't get up too to much don't want to risk the out come of your new bite =]

hey,

i had sarpe surgery about a month ago. I thought i would have to take a month off the gym, but i started hittin the gym about a week and a half later. First few weight sessions were easy as i felt tired and weak, but a month later im feeling about 95%. I never asked anyone, just went by how i felt, dont think ive done any damage....
