I realize this posting hasn't had a post in around 4 years...but i just found this thread and you all have given me hope, as jaw surgery is something i have wanted since i was 17..and i'm nearing 47 and starting to dream of this again. I was concerned about my age. I haven't talked with any doctors yet, but as soon as i get some fillings taken care of, i will be going forth in my long awaited journey. I had braces way back then and the whole nine, but my dreams died...but they have once again awakened.

Keep in mind that a lot of people (even younger people) complain that they look older post-op. Especially in cases where they present with a gummy smile and end up getting their maxilla impacted.

Wait really? Is there a reason for this?

Yes, when you have your maxilla shortened or your uppers intruded, this can lead to midface laxity or loose skin in the mid face. You have the same amount of skin but less bone and
bone acts as scaffolding.

I am currently in braces for a Class 2 bite (overjet) following jaw fractures sustained in a bike accident last year. My orthodontist said that he wouldn't recommend jaw surgery for me because of my age - 56 at the time. I didn't ask for his reasons why, because I would not consider it either. If I had been 10 years younger, I might have. He said braces could only get me so far -- an improvement but not perfection. I can deal with that.

If you are seriously considering jaw surgery, get it done earlier rather than later, for ease/time of healing and nothing else.
