My operation a fail. The truth finally

So today I went and saw the surgeon I told him what I've been telling anyone who would listen, that when I swallow or move my mouth I have movement on the left side of my jaw.

For this I've been told it's nothing. It could be muscle but today my surgeon said the reason I can feel movement is because my jaw is moving. It has not healed. his words it wiggles.

So I'm in shock I don't ask the question what do we do. I sit there silent.

So he told me to take the elastic band off, I'm not to wear them at all.
I'm have an emergency appointment with him at a different hospital on Monday. And there is a posibility that I will need surgery again

So question I should have asked what's the plan of action. How long are they going to leave me like this.

It is painfully. I don't want to do more damage. Its all a bit of a mess.

When I had my op they moved the front of jaw down 1mm and the back up3mm on both sides so that means there are gaps where my bones didn't meat. This I found out today.

Does anyone know what will happen. Or what possible treatment there is for this.

I'm so scared and confussed right now.

While I'm not a surgeon, I imagine that the plan will be to, at least, go in and re-do the internal fixation (the plates and screws.) He may also outfit you with a splint. Here's to hoping you don't have to be wired shut, but prepare yourself for the possibility.

I don't think the surgery itself will be as traumatic as the initial operation. I don't think there will be a need for them to re-do the entire incision and bone cut, but your surgeon will have to tell you the plan for sure.

I'm sorry this has been such a pain, but I'm glad you finally got them to actually check their work.

Ty sirwired,
Don't think I can cope with a splint don't hunk I can cope with surgery again,
When you have a splint is it just wired to the upper jaw or both jaws it the do wire it sesame will I be able to open my mouth at all.

Is there any questions I should be asking when I go in on Monday.

My splint is wired to my upper archwire only; it has a ridge on the underside for my lower teeth to rest in when my mouth is closed. Although I talk like there's marbles in my mouth, it doesn't restrict the movement of anything except my tongue.

Ty sirwired,

It's worrying me a lot know it hasn't healed, and there is nothing I can do. I really don't want a splint. I need to work and that invokes slot of talking. Can't afford to take anytime off. I will lose my flat my landlord is not the modest of people if ya a day late with rent 30 days later your homeless.

I'm just going to have to wait till Monday to see what he says. And hope it fixes it self.

I am so sorry that you're going through this. It sounds very rough.

I would request a prescription pain medication from the surgeon, and maybe a prescription anti-nausea med too (sometimes pain pills can upset your stomach). If he knows that there is a problem with your healing, he should be willing to prescribe these.

If you have to have more surgery, make sure that you remind them how ill you were from the anesthesia. They can put anti-nausea meds in your IV while you're asleep, and they will help a lot with the post op sickness.

I have not had a surgery like yours, but I did have a major surgery a couple of years ago. After six months, the doctor realized that he'd need to go back in for more surgery, and I was so depressed. I did not think that I could stand to do it again. But the revision surgery really went a lot more smoothly, and I healed easier. I'll be hoping that the same thing goes for you.

And finally, I would tell your surgeon that you really need to know what to plan for the days/weeks ahead, as you have to be able to pay rent, etc. and can't keep taking huge chunks of time off. Are your parents or friends able to help temporarily? Do you have anything of value (not sentimental value) that you could sell?

I'm just so sorry that you're going through all of this. I know how much it sucks.

Thank you Norrie,
I see my surgeon on Monday will ask him then for pain killers,

I have written a list of question.

1 why have I not healed.
2 how are you going to stabalize my jaw.
3 will I need surgery and when
4 what type of surgery will it be.
5 what's the recovery time.
6 what length of time will I be in hospital.

7 if no sergery how long will it take to heal.
8 how are we going to help it heal.

Is there any different questions anyone that you would ask.

So now all I'm going to do now is rest as much as I can. Just spent the last 16 hours sleeping.

Thank you everyone for all your support. It's helps me so much to know I'm not alone with this.

Update,

Went to surgeon today he went throyght what going to happen with my jaw.

We are going to leave it for a month to see if it will heal on it's own. As I have kept my bite and there is sigh of some on the bone has healed.

If after a month if it not healed I will have surgery to have plates put in.

So I have a waiting game. My ortho treatment is on hold till my jaw is fixed. Still not allowed to chew so liquid for the next month.

Am really not happy , get to see him again in two weeks.

Ugh, so sorry about the liquid diet and not getting more answers, but I guess that it's good that he's giving it longer to heal rather than just diving into surgery. I'll be hoping that you have a huge turn around over the next two weeks. Try not to let it get to you too much. It's really hard, I know.

Oh it just don't stop having a real nightmare of a life right now. My mums cat has been poisioned and don't think it's going to live.

Now I lost my bite and I don't know what to do.

I see the ortho on Friday and the surgeon on the 28.

So what ive done is stuck my old bands on the way the were before the surgeon said I could no longer wear them see if that brings my bite back.

Oh no! So sorry to hear about your mom's cat.
Good luck with your bite. What do you mean when you say that you lost it? I'm new here, so I don't understand a lot of the terminology.

Scraggy, if you've lost your bite, and he specifically told you not to put the elastics on that way, I would get on the phone to his office for an appointment TODAY. You're in an ever-changing and unusual situation. Don't wait two weeks to see him. What's going on now is out of the scope of an orthodontist. You need to get in to your surgeon to be re-evaluated. Don't be afraid of being a "bother." He gets paid big bucks, and this is why. Call him. Be the squeaky wheel.

I'm sorry to hear about the cat. Our neighbors have lost many cats, and we nearly lost our cat...always the same symptoms, and the vets are always at a loss. We think some cat-hating neighbor poisons them.

Good luck, and keep us posted.
