chicago29, it was just a quick neuro exam along with everything else - less than 3 minutes for that part, probably. I was also put in a gown and given a complete physical and EKG (I'm age 37). I was a little surprised, but happy to get a good once over for peace of mind.

I am going to be alone most of the day of surgery. My husband has to drop me off, get kids to school and littles to grandmas, then come back, but I may already be in surgery. Afterwards, he should be there for a little bit, but needs to be back home for kids to get off the bus. I don't care too much about after- I think I'll be so happy to be alive and finished with surgery that I won't care. Plus like someone said, we're not going to be exactly entertaining our visitors!

Tomorrow I have my final ortho pre surgery appointment where i get the final molds and surgical hooks put in place. Two days after is my pre surgery appointment with the surgeon for photos and signing of forms. Monday I'll meet the anesthetist and Tuesday is the surgery itself!

It's like, after such a long wait with ups and downs it's FINALLY time for the surgery! I'm excited yet anxious

Sorry, I should've mentioned what I'm having done. I'm having my maxilla advanced with a hip bone graft and my mandible retracted to correct an underbite. I will be wired with a splint for a few weeks. I never tried to remember the technical terms for the procedure x.x

I'm just getting prepared for the weekend today. Hopefully I can get back to you all by then to tell you that it was the easiest thing I've ever done (I'm being very optimistic lol). I plan on eating nonstop until midnight.

Until then!

Nearly there,
Went to ortho today for final moulds and adjustments yay! I now have hooks never thought I would be happy to have them as they are already begining to pinch lol oh well!!
Got a small shock again....Im really laid back about my treatment as I have braces before Im still abit doubtful yep even though they are going to break both my jaws Im still thinking "this isnt going to work". I guess I find it soooo hard to imagine looking any I kind of dont dare to dream almost.
Anyways, asked ortho how much of my gummy smile I can expect to loose and she told me that I could loose at least 6mm I was stunned. How good is that? She said that I could only be left with 1mm It blew me away and made me even more excited. So Im really excited all over again!!!
So next week its photos and scan of mouth for clearer measurements!!!Forwards march xxx

I imagine your results will be fantastic enigma! 6mm gummy smile reduction is fantastic.

At my appointment on wednesday (to check my wafer/splint fit- it did) my ortho showed me the model of how my new bite will be (that odd contraption where they attach your molds to the bite-thing...whatever it is  )- it was both wierd to see my jaws actually meeting normally (that is to say, with my uppers slightly infront of my lowers!) and also exhilarating. I think it will take a while to get used to actually being able to chew things properly, and to have no more underbite!

I am so excited right now :D

Thinking of you Instinvs - sending good vibes your way

I have had mine for months now - they are a pain, but at least I am used to them now.

OhioM - how old are your kids? How long is your husband going to be home to help you. My two boys are 2.5 and 4. My husband is having the week off after I am home. Hopefully that will be enough. My Mum is around though for the following week if I need a break etc. My eldest son starts his first day of kindy on the 27th of Jan (not quite 2 weeks post op). I have to go for 2 hours with him - I guess I won't be that talkative, but I need/want to be there for him.

enigma - do you know what your impaction will be? I am concerned that mine won't be enough. OS is doing a 5mm impaction, but I show about a centimeter of gum when I really smile - so I don't see how that adds up. He didn't want to do more because I'd have extra skin or something. I know what you mean about not being able to really believe what's about to happen. I'm more concerned about having to postpone surgery due to illness or something, rather than the outcome being not good.

Ifwood - my kids are 12, 10, 9, 6, 4, and 3. I'm glad to see that you have your mom on the way! My husband has 2.5 weeks off after surgery and I guess that had better be enough because he doesn't just go back to work at that point, he leaves TOWN. I'm pretty concerned about being up to full speed after that. I do a lot of running around and going to games, ect...I may beg my little brother (31 and single) to travel to us and be a taxi driver for a week....we'll see!

crazybeautiful - GOOD LUCK and there's no way they're going to cancel on you at this point

Just thought I'd stop by and thank everyone for the kind wishes. I'm actually doing pretty well right now (although my nose feels like a second face lol). It's going on 7am right now and I should be heading home in a few hours. The last 2 days were pretty miserable but surprisingly some of the swelling is already beginning to subside and my throat no longer feels like I'm swallowing nails (I had 2 tubes in my nose and down my throat when I woke up--not a comfy feeling). Anyway, I'm gonna try to sleep until I can get out of here. I think I may need a shower too, even though my hip is rather sore. All I can say is that, overall, it's not such a big deal. The first two days were not too pleasant but I'm already beginning to feel normal again (but I keep forgetting I can't open my mouth lol).

To riotshield - I hope you're doing well already. The short time I've been in the hospital has been quite a journey, but I hope you're managing to pull through ok.

And good luck to the rest of you. If anybody has any questions, please feel free to let me know. I'll try to answer ASAP.

Best regards!
- Justin

riotshield- hope you do great! Keep us posted when you can :)

ivstinvs- glad to hear you're coping well. I'm prepared for the first few days to be horrible

To both of you (or anyone who knows)- do you have a splint/wafer, and what is it like? I'm just wondering because in my splint/wafer fitting I don't think I tried on the actual splint, just the two molds of my uppers and lowers seperately. It was quite hard plastic

And thank OhioM; the hospital uses a new system now for surgeries, so I think this has something to do with less cancellations happening all round. I think my ortho said her last 2 patients hadn't been cancelled either. At this point like you I'm just hoping I won't end up getting a cold or something before the surgery!

I think the hardest part for me was trying to breathe through my nose the last two nights. Luckily, my surgeon did not use the splint so I was able to breathe through my mouth (even with about ten gallons of drool every 2 minutes lol), so I wouldn't be able to tell you much about it. However, he did try them on me about 2 days before and they were, as you said, just hard plastic. I don't know if I would've been able to manage with the splint and severely congested, bloody nose. I'm still getting over some of the congestion and I'm walking pretty well on my own, even though I was advised not to walk too much. Now that I'm home, I'm chugging down a nice chocolate shake. It's the best feeling to finally have some substance in my stomach. Anyway, expect that the first 2 days will be hell but a little optimism will help you get through it much faster.
