I HAVE a professional surgeon with a good eye for aesthetics. Which is why my surgery turned out perfectly.

Hi July people!

Damn, they put those surgical hooks on my this last wednesday! And I'm not due until the 7th! Am I just a lucky girl or what? It's hell having them on; the insides of my mouth is swollen and bruised. The inside og my lips get caught when I move my lips (you know, most of the day  )

Was it hard talking with the surgical hooks starting from day 1 ?, I have to give a 4 hours lecture, a day after I get the surgical hooks. Should I reschedule ?
Noam.

OH nooo...really? I'm so sorry that those surgical hooks are painful. I thought they were just annoying?

Josh gets them on July 12th, all day classes and preop on the 19th and his surgery is the 26th.

He is in a camp the week of the 12th. I'm wondering whether that will be a good idea or not?

My surgery was April 16. I had the surgical hooks put on the day before because the orthodontist said I wouldn't like them. He was right. I had a hook between EACH bracket. They are very annoying. The hooks aren't painful themselves, but they can cause additional canker sores and mouth irritation. Having them on for several weeks before surgery would be a nuisance for sure. If you can, try to book the appointment for the hooks as close to your surgery date as you can.

My oral surgeon wants new molds taken too. Did you have to do that Audra?

I think they need a week to get the new molds ready, so those are on the 16th in preparation for the pre op appointments the following on the 19th. My ortho said the oral surgeon will want the molds and to see the hooks on that pre op appointment.

Surgery is a week later on the 26th.

I think I'll see if she can put the hooks on on the 16th. That's an extra appointment, but it sounds like the less time in hooks, the better.

My son will fiddle with the hooks, so the less time he's in them the better!

Yes, I had to get molds done again by the orthodontist. He then forwards them to the surgeon. My surgeon usually likes to have them 2 weeks before surgery, but he was going to be on vacation so I had them done around 3 weeks pre-op. He uses the molds to do the mock surgery with, so they are definitely needed. At my pre-op appointment the surgeon took wax impressions of both arches, and he made sure the molds fit into the impressions. He also used a caliper like contraption on my called a facebow. It's kind of weird looking, but doesn't hurt. With the combination of all of this, he has proper measurements for the surgery and the tools he needs to make the surgical splint (if your son will have one, which is likely).

If you can get an appointment for Josh to get his hooks closer to surgery, it would definitely be worth it for him.

No, it shouldn't be a problem. As long as you don't move your lips more than you need. I know have this deep hole where one of the hooks get's caught all the time.. It was infected, but the anti bacteria stuff I use works know :)
Just use a lot of that wax you get from your dentist.

Audra; I have hooks all over my mouth too - but maybe I'm just unlucky?

I've brushed and used mouthwash, but I graduated the day before I got them and since then it's been non-stop social events. A lot of talking/moving my mouth. It is painful!

Okay, just found out why the hooks have been so hard to deal with: At least two of them are wrong. You know that little "ball" that is at the end of each hook? On two of the hooks, the metal wire goes on beneath the ball. There's a piece of wire piercing into my mouth..

I AM SO BUMMED!

We got a phone call last night from Kaiser telling us that Dr. O'Ryan has injured her arm and her surgeries have been cancelled!

While I have compassion for her injury, I'm also so sad about our surgery being cancelled/postponed!

It was all lined up perfectly for our summer and for Josh to be able to start school in the fall healed.

They are suppose to call us today and offer a different surgeon, but I'm certain the date will not be July 26th.

Hi Josh's mom,

So sorry to hear that! I know exactly how gut-wrenchingly frustrated you must feel - back in May my surgery was postponed 3 days before it was due to go ahead and I could have murdered my surgeon (even though it wasn't his fault!)

Try not to get too upset though, fate has obviously decided that this is how it's meant to be so it's best just to focus on the positives - your Dr's office will do their best to get a date as close as possible to your old one and it may only be a short delay 8)

Fingers crossed for some good news for you!

Thank you for the compassion!

Kaiser called and is referring us to Dr. John Dann

Anyone heard of him? We have an appointment to meet him Friday morning. Gosh, I hope we like him and that he likes Josh.

I was feeling so comfortable about it and now I'm back to that anxious state!

Unless there is some miracle, it won't be July 26th.
