Haven't heard in from Crazybeautiful yet ... sending happy thoughts to her and Ifwood!!

Day three and four I get progressively swollen. Day one and two I refused to look into my mouth. So by day three when I do, it's gross :P I tentatively gargled and waterpiked, then used my ortho brush head to manually brush. I felt a lot better after that and now i do that at least 3x a day after medication. Which I hate. yux yux yux.

It's hard to look inside because of the swelling but I see the blue stitches and the elastics all the way in. I expect the swelling to start going down today (day four).

The way my teeth are banded and how my mouth is small to start with makes it a pain to gargle. It's easy enough to suck in water through my teeth or syringe it in through the sides but crazy to push same liquids out. There's also no space to squeeze in any pills of any size. Not even through the back behind my molars.

I'm super lazy. Finding the Ensure Plus was a godsend >.< I walked past the pharmacy on the way from the ward to the taxi stand and they waved at me! Haha. They were in 250ml servings and I bought 12 and lugged them home.

I realise that I OVERATE for day two and three. I bought Ensure PLUS which is 1.5kca per pack of 250ml and I had two of that on day two and three. No wonder I didn't feel hungry enough for a third pack! Today I will take about 1.5 packs and drink more soya and yoghurt drinks as well as apple juice.

They are a bit thicker than milk but not quite milkshakey. And they were in flavours i dig: fruits of the forest, SPAM SPAM SPAM and raspberry. I still have tins of normal powdered Ensure that I will use next week. (These are the normal 230kcal/230ml kind)

I'm stretching my mouth periodically. Weird tingling, aches and pains throughout but despite the numbness and swelling, feeling is there. My tongue feels complete normal and mutilated by the molar band hooks but there's nothing to be done about it.

My lips are still peeling. It's like, wow there's a lot of skin to peel off >.< Liberal use of vaseline means it doesn't hurt though.

<warning: bowel movement discussion ahead>
And though I've been to pee plenty, I haven't had to poop yet. Which makes sense since I've not had solid food for almost 4 days now. I tend to feel dehydrated so I drink more apple juice or soya milk or yoghurt drinks.

Can't wait till Monday when I hopefully get disbanded!!

Final last consult with ortho yesterday....so final measurements are (sorry if i dont know technical terms again) upper jaw being moved up by approx 6mm lower jaw being brought out by 7mm......still dont know if that clears up your "impaction" question Ohio you will have to let me know on that one!!! But still it sounds like a huge shift for the general shape of my lower face so I guess the ortho might be right I couls look REALLY different but in a good way!
Had MRSA nasal swabs taken too icky icky not comfy!!!
Also surprised to find that I was verging on comfortable having my final photos taken.....first time I was cringing and found it personally really difficult but this time I felt ok amazing what getting both your jaws broke can do for the smile factor eh?!?! lol
Well I just thought I would put my thoughts on here.
Still wishing everyone well with their recoveries so good to hear your experiences.
How are you feeling Ohio? Any plans for your weekend prior to surgery?

Glad everyone is doing well, and good luck everyone else.

Just thought I'd add that I have a stitch between my eyebrows/eyes Anyone know what that was for? I assume something to do with my midline....?

Glad to year your surgery(s) have gone well!

Crazybeautiful- I also had a stitch, it is where they put a a post between your eyes during surgery to use as a reference point for all of their measurements. That is the only point on your face that is "stable" during surgery. I put ointment on it for a couple weeks post-op so it wouldn't scar.

Congrats again to everyone, and good luck to everyone who's left in January!

Aaah, interesting. I assumed it would be a reference point for something or other :)

I'm home. Surgery - lower jaw advancement 6 mm. All went well, slight over correction and one tooth is bumping on the others - ortho will need to pull it out slightly. Am banded with 3 bands - one centre and the other two are pulling my jaw slightly back a bit.

Spent an extra night in hospital to have some peace from the kids - total 3 nights, with one night being in intensive care unit.

Op was scheduled for 4pm - didn't go in til nearly 7pm - was starving already. Upon waking had oxygen in nose, but tube was already out of my throat. Had 2 drains - one on either side of lower jaw. They weren't pleasant but I can honestly say that I didn't have to spit any blood and my mouth is very clean. Had an IV drip in for certain anti swelling meds, but was taking pain medication via capsule form.

Anyway, thanks for all the well wishes. I will check back in later.

Leonie

Was eating soft food on day two - weet bix cereal, pasta with sauce, pureed chicken and gravy. The hospital was great - they really looked after me. Came home with a tonne of drugs too.

Welcome back and congratulations to those who are already "on the other side"; and all best wishes to those with their surgery still to come.

(Hope you don't mind me gatecrashing your January thread but with my next surgery still nowhere in sight I might as well celebrate everyone else's )

Met with the surgeon again today, had cheek stitches removed and I've been disbanded! I was given "Penguin" elastics and my "homework" was to ensure that I am elasticized every minute that I'm not eating or brushing my teeth.

She taught me two different configurations
- one for awake and up and about use
one Vee top left to bottom middle to top right.
one upside down Vee bottom left to top middle to bottom right.

- one for asleep and unconscious use
zig zags on each side keeping molars together. I tried to look closer and memorise the placements and she said it doesn't matter as long as my molars were held closed (as closed as they can get because they can't reach one another!) and my jaw immobile.

I see her again on Saturday 23 Jan for another review.

18 Jan 2010: 1st post-op appointment
23 Jan 2010: 2nd post-op appointment

My jaw aches and when I ventured in to examine my mouth... there are patches of yellow and white skin. The inner stitches are blue and obvious. There is swelling behind my molars. I feel safer with my elastics on >.<

Now that my jaw is in the right place, my tongue finally has space in my mouth. My molars finally have space to come out properly (they never came up the whole way) and it just feels so good to grin at myself in the mirror... my front teeth meet!!!

Ifwood, Congratulations and glad you're on the road to recovery! Why did they have you in intensive care unit for a night?

I'm doing great - a little jittery when I think about it, but I'm staying so busy it's fine. We're going out to dinner tomorrow night. Packing my hospital bag today and cleaning.

I guess that is just where you go here in Australia. I spent most of the next day there too cause they didn't have a bed in a normal ward for me - oh well, I wasn't paying for it. Ha ha

Off for an xray today. Went to have it yesterday but he computers weren't working so I have to come back today. First post op check in 2 days.

Got some flowers from my ortho which was nice.

Little bit of bruising starting to go yellow on my cheeks now. Haven't really had a good look in my mouth yet. Brushing my teeth is a chore again, but getting there. Swelling is going down. Its really hard to smile though.

My elastiks are called 'Cathy'. They say they are 1/8' (3.2mm). Very tight. I have the special ortho pliers to put them on. Fun, fun.
