CandyApple: Yeah the dizzyness comes and goes. I felt really good yesterday, then kind of worn out and achy today. I think I overdid it on some cleaning and cooking this morning and that kind of set the stage for the rest of the day. I did make some crockpot white chicken chili which blends beautifully though! My boyfriend will drive me to work next week when I go back since I'm still feeling off. I think the swelling is affecting my eyesight a bit?
Surgeon was super pleased with bite. My swelling is actually really calm apparently. The entire office was like, whoa! I do have more on the right side. No bands yet--I will get those on my next appointment 11/1 to help move some things around. He actually said I could start soft food on Saturday
the recovery has sucked since it's def no walk in the park. but I'm counting my blessings. luckily i had little to no nausea/dizziness and i was able to eat/drink/walk right off the bat. the main thing is that i used to have a very big smile that i loved before surgery but because of the stiffness i have this weird freaky half smile for now. lol not only that but the insides of my cheeks feel so raw and hurts/stings every time i try to move it.
kpw818, good to hear that your bite is looking good! I'm a little nervous about moving on to soft foods. let me know how that goes!
Oh I'm glad you had no nausea. That has been the worst thing for me. I was so sick on Saturday last week. Are you wired/banded? My face hasn't been real stiff, thankfully. I have some more swelling on one side though, so my smile is a little crooked. It kind of goes with my chipmunk/cherub look I'm rocking these days after surgery.
I had eggs and pancakes this morning! It was so weird to chew! It took me like an hour to eat two eggs and one pancake, but it was tasty. I just took really really small bites and focused on chewing gently
Surgery went well on Tuesday. Not a lot of pain so far, just some at night (I think my jaws get stiff while I sleep). Still on prescription meds, and those are making me a bit dizzy and groggy. Definitely got some good swelling in my cheeks--I'll post some pictures up later this afternoon!
I have noticed my upper teeth aren't quite right, but they said it was due to swelling--anyone else experience this?
How is everyone else doing?
Hey kpw, just wanted to say hi, I'm so glad your surgery went well!
Thank you! Healing up pretty well and on to soft foods today. I am thankful for not being wired. I do not thing my movements were major overall, and I think that is why they are okay with me chewing and not being banded right now. Still rocking the hardware in my face, which is kind of cool
Hello all, today I am 2weeks and 3 days post op. My lower lip is starting to concern me with the strange burning feeling. Especially when I eat something saucy. It doesn't bother me at all when I sleep so resting is no problem. It's just the action of moving and talking or eating. I tried puting some lip gloss on and that too makes it burn. How have the rest of you been fairing with numbness or other sensations?
My upper lip is the main numb one. No straws, and I still dribble when I try to drink from a cup most of the time. My bottom lip is okay. I have a lot of numbness in my mouth (especially the roof of my mouth) and the sides, so eating is really weird, slow and messy.
One thing I noticed is that my sense of taste is off. Things are less sweet across the board. Made cupcakes last night and they seemed bland. When I drink fruit juice, it tastes straight up sour to me. I had some sips of wine, same thing. Anyone else notice this?
kwp did you have bsso on lower jaw? I heard if you just have upper your nerves should heal quickly. My lower lip is completely numb, but has tightness and burning. Nothing on upper since I only did lower jaw. The sense of taste has seem a little diminished it could be due to me eating mashed foods and stuff I normally don't eat in my regular diet. I have only lost 2 pounds because all Im eating is mushy carbs... I am normally a crispy salad and lean meat protein eater.
I just read you said they told you that you can chew!! wow I was told not until 6 weeks. When I do try I get a lot of pain on one side anyway. Im wondering if your lower jaw only moved a little bit that may be why you have feeling. They told me I would move 4-5mm but after surgery surgeon said 6mm.

i'm in the same boat when it comes to numbness. I mean, everything from the eyes down have some sort of numbness but it's the upper AND lower lip, roof of mouth and upper sides, and chin that feeling is basically non existent for me so straws are a no go and cups are still a challenge but getting better. but my sense of taste is largely still the same. do you feel like your tongue is numb at all? maybe that's what's been altering your taste buds? that's really interesting.

i'm 2 weeks post op today. in terms of the lower lip burning feeling, I haven't experienced that to the extent that it sounds like you are. I occasionally get tingling (and yes burning) but it quickly goes away and eating/touching/ointments/chapstick/etc doesn't seem to affect it. although to put your mind to ease, i do remember seeing a thread on the message boards where someone complained of that same burning feeling and several commenters said they experienced the same thing. hopefully it's just nerves regenerating themselves!

I experienced major burning/tingling last summer after my wisdom tooth extraction, which was very complicated (ended up with a partially fractured jaw) and resulted in a partially severed nerve. I had a lot of numbness that has somewhat dissipated, but the first few weeks I had the same crazy tingling feeling. My surgeon recommended taking vitamin B12 to help the process along. I'm not looking forward to even more numbness after my surgery on Monday! Also I'm super nervous since it's only a few days away...any advice on how to calm down?

Littlebird. You sound like you had a nerve trauma with the wisdoms tooth extraction. That's almost exactly what happened to me two years ago when they took out my number 30 molar from a crack. The dentist put in an implant and the screw hit my nerve it had to be immediately taking out three days later because my lip was burning on that side of my face. I experienced burning and multiple different things like Coldwater sensation all types of things but the painful aspects of it eventually resolved around six weeks. After a couple more months I was only left with minor altered sensation and no numbness at all. My surgeon knew about this injury so he let me know right away after surgery how my nerve was. He said they were able to see it the whole time and it was protected. At my postop he says he suspects I will get most of my feeling back but that some people have different ways of explaining what they are feeling . For example I'm saying burning when somebody else might say tingling. To me it just feels like some type of electrical healing or mending type thing is going on. It would really suck if this didn't get better but my implant injury got so much better that would be strange. So I'm trying not to freak out yet. As far as being nervous I know exactly what you mean because I canceled my first scheduled surgery because of my previous injury making me fear it more. But then I realized that if I healed from it once and the doctor knows to be careful as long as everything is done properly why wouldn't I heal from it again ? That was the question I asked myself and how I decided to proceed with it. I also asked for anti-anxiety medicine just to make sure I got there on surgery day. Lol I just think the nerve goes through different phases and part of that is the acute phase which is in the beginning and maybe what I'm feeling now and then once it simmers down it will just become something that is easier to handle.
littlebird, good luck with your upcoming surgery! to calm those nerves, i'd suggest keeping busy and making sure you are prepared for the recovery stage. leading up to my surgery, i mixed some protein shakes and ensure shakes and kept them in the fridge to make sure i had something calorie dense all ready to go for when i got home from the hospital. i also went grocery shopping and cooked/froze some homemade soups, cleaned, and organized everything as best i could in preparation.
i also found that making daily goals on what i wanted to accomplish post op was helpful so that i could focus on the recovery and have that in sight rather than stressing about the surgery itself. posting those goals where i would see it everyday also helped. For example, i wanted to get 600 cal per meal 3-4 times a day, going for 15 min walks 2x a day, avoiding narcotics when possible, etc. seeing it on a daily basis helped remind me what i needed to do.

Good Luck TDhenson!! It really does get better quickly. Just did my 2 week follow-up and am amazed how much better I feel. You will sleep so much better when you teeth and jaws are happily in the optimal place. The surgeon told me today then moved my lower jaw 6mm forward and I have 3 screws on both sides.
Thanks for the encouragement! I have been really excited for surgery and the nerves are getting up there. It's good to know that two weeks out, you're already glad you did it!
I just got my surgical wires and hooks put on this morning! So strange. I thought I was a metal mouth before. Now, it's just wires all over the place. I guess I can now fit in with the name "metal mouth message board".

Pantlover, thank you so much for the advice; I particularly like the idea of posting goals where I can see them.
tdhenson, I know what you mean about feeling like a total metal mouth with the hooks on!

Hey td, just wanted to say good luck to you this week. I'm heading to the hospital early tomorrow morning for my surgery. I'm nervous but also looking forward to it now. It's been such a long road. See you on the other side!

Just got back from my preparation visit to the surgeon, and it's all go for the 24th. The upper jaw will be moved 5mm higher and 3mm forward, and the lower jaw will go 5mm back. Having already been through SARPE I've a good idea of what to expect, but I get the feeling that this will also be somewhat worse!
